Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme? Wed, September 3, 2008
TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."
A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.
The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.
Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
CBC must have Tiger Woods as their consultant, "is any watching hockey anymore"; lets change the theme song; what new direction? CBC couldn't find it way out of a square rubber room. Keep the song get rid of the CBC.

CBC giving up the song is upsetting but not surprising. Wait for their announcement, next season they will have Bob Cole rapping a new up to date them song. Wait lets keep the song and get rid of Bob Cole!! No that makes too much sense.

CBC execs drop $500 every time they go out for lunch. Listen up CBC...you're the network for the people, and the WE THE PEOPLE want our HNIC anthem to continue.
Seriously though....does anyone think these decisions ( such as dropping the theme song ) through before they make them? Obviously not.

Is this a bad joke or what? Who minding the store at CBC. I hope the execs read this before the start of next season, maybe a few emails directed to CBCs major sponsores will get their attention. You know they won't heed the outcry from the masses.

I say keep the theme song and get rid of the CBC!!! Last year when the contract expired to brodcast HNIC I was hoping TSN would have won the rights to broadcast HNIC....Oh! Yeah! Get rid of Bob and Harry with the CBC...our tax dollars at work!!
Mark, 2008-06-05 21:30:08
CBC wants to lose the HNIC song- yeah , that's real
intelligent! They are slowly losing the one brand that makes money.Time to privatize that turkey.
If it's a budget problem,
drop Don Cherry. That egomanic is losing it-
cherrypicking (pun) clips
to verify his wisdom.But it
was fun to see him grovelling, trying to suck
up to Crosby after calling him a hotdog for the lacrosse move in junior and
"golden boy " most of last year.
Let TSN take the song.With
time, they probably will be
the main sports broadcaster.

KEEP IT and yes I am yelling as I do when Hockey Night in Canada comes on.

I can remember as a 10 year old, looking back over my shoulder as I left the ice to put on my boots and run home - just in time for the game. Dad would be in his chair in front of the tv., and Mom would be handing me a cup of cocoa as I came in, and scolding me for letting my feet and fingers get so cold. I'd just have time to bump my little brother out of my favorite spot on the couch and there it played: the HNIC theme.
My daughter now plays hockey with her friends and on Saturday nights, we watch the game together. I make the cocoa.
Keep the tradition.

Definitely, keep the HNIC theme song. Why get rid of a tradition because it is a tradition?
Jim Blanchard, 2008-06-05 20:57:39
WHAT . . . is this another bonehead - bad PR move by the CBC? Ever since I was a little boy, Saturday nights were reserved for HNIC with Dad and my brothers. 40 years later that tradition continues (with my own family) and it all starts with that very familiar tune. Whatever the issue is, hopefully HNIC will reverse their decision and continue what is a must to start our Saturday nights during hockey season.
