Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

The issue is apparently not the lousy $500. It is the fact of the CBC being sued. It sounds a bit like the song's composer knows there would be a tremendous backlash against the CBC (and rightly so) and is hoping they will knuckle under and settle the lawsuit out of court for a huge payday. The CBC is floating this stupid idea of replacing it to show they have options and won't be intimidated. To quote a CBC exec "We continue to negotiate, but the reality is, if somebody’s suing you, you tend not to do business with them down the road,” The sad truth is they DON'T really have options: this song is a piece of Canadian history - even they must know this - and they will have to settle or suffer the unending wrath of Canadians from coast to coast. People will never, ever forgive them.

I'm flabbergasted! Businesses would give their right arm for brand recognition like that! The CBC seems to have forgotten what the first C in CBC stands for!

What the article failed to mention,is that the cbc's being sued by the writer of the song (Mrs. Claman i believe her name is)for $2 millions, over so called "misuse" of the song.

Goes to show...CBC can't even play a frigging song right.

This is the last straw. How many mistakes can these BOZOS make. I listened to the song with my father and now my son and daughter listen with me. It is appauling to think the CBC would give up on this icon of Canadiana. Do they really think that a new theme song will take off? I highly doubt it and I feel sorry for the people that try to outdo this classic. Their song will forever be thought of as the junk that replaced the real Hockey theme song.

HNIC without the familiar theme music - you've got to be kidding me!! My six year old goes nuts when he hears it, as it is HOCKEY TIME! CBC, please remove your head from your hind end and keep HNIC classic!

jaw droppin'.....

truly jaw droppin'......

what a horrific blunder....

heck while we're at it let's get rid of the birthday song and replace it with somethin' cheaper!

What would happen if TSN picked up the song and took over where CBC left off

I agree with an earlier poster. Play "The Good Ole Hockey Game" by Stompin' Tom...a true Canadian icon. While you're at it, get rid of Ron & Don. They're getting a little passe. Bring on the arrogant guy from The Fan. That'll liven things up. Better yet, tape the Saturday night game and televise it on Wednesday night. Not much on then to my liking.

We have been listening to this for so long please reconsider and keep it forever.
