Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?

This is your Canadian tax dollar's at work again. Keep the song. Get rid of the suits at CBC who want to get rid of the song. Why does the CBC have such bad management? As taxpayers who fund this organization, we deserve better decision making.

If the HNIC is as important as you all say it is, then I feel $500 dollars is a bargain. The CBC elitist bafoons are just too ignorant to respect the composer of this excellent song. This reminds me of the time they fired Don Cherry. I think we remember how that worked out.

So CBC, do us all a favour and GET A CLUE!

I can't believe that CBC is dropping the song.

Whether it's over money or another issue, this tune has been a staple in Canadian culture FOREVER.

THIS SUCKS!!!!!

I grew up to that song, hearing it today makes me smile, it is the hockey anthem how can you change that. Unless HNIC finally separating from Canada and moving to Toronto? Maybe now they can replace the theme song with a Toronto Maple Leafs chant.

The HNIC song has been apart of my life since came to Canada 1967 and I watched my first game at 6yrs old ... It defines a part of the Canada identity.

The reasons stated is to update the HNIC , to make it appeal more a wide audience. That's a false marketting ploy. The segment of the population enjoys watching sports will do so anyway. The theme song is a comfortable way the settle your mind into that relaxed mode....

I won't stop watching Hockey Night in Canada because they changed the theme song. However if I had to chose between HNIC and another carrier the familarity of theme song won't be their to sway me or the get pop, chip or beer ready for game.

Ok... So CBC shows, what, like 40 games per year or so... at 500 bucks a pop thats 20000$. So $20K doesnt seem all that expensive.... its like saving pennies in the grand scheme of things...

Ya know, I find myself puzzled. What are the current "owners" of the HNIC themesong going to DO with it if CBC doesn't settle this matter?

I mean, it's not like they can really sell it to some other sporting program to use as THEIR theme, ya know? There's really limited use for it. The prospects of making money off it someplace else are severely limited, at best.

Frankly, I think the CBC *should* be playing hardball with these people. They've NOWHERE else to go -- so why spend top dollar on an old song?

Honestly ...

The HNIC song has become a Canadian cultural icon. Hockey is the bread and butter for the CBC. Why the disconnect? The song and CBC belong together. Another song worthy of mention is the high-energy "Saturday" song by Nickleback which follows the HNIC theme...keep that song as well. CBC, don't screw up as you did with the Ron McLean incident.

How can CBC even consider giving up our national hockey theme song! My philosphy is "if it works, don't mess with it". We watched hockey and knew the Hockey Night in Canada song as little kids, then it went through our boys and now on to our grandson! How can you even think of doing something like this. What would make hockey better? Keep the theme song and get rid of Bettman!
Pete & Debbie, 2008-06-06 08:56:22

i for one am sick and tired of that song. but i would rather keep that song than have the suits at cbc replace it with avril lavigne-miley cyrus type pop crap like other shows
