Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Another piece of our Canadian identity taken away from us. It's all part of the plan, people. If you're upset now over a song, wait until Toronto is full of illegal Mexicans, the Canadian dollar has been replaced by the Amero, everyone is earning minimum wage, and you're healthcare has been taken away. That's what our next 10 years looks like.

I have to admit, this song is as much a part of my Canadian identity as Oh Canada, perhaps moreso. This is political; this would not happen if a right wing government wasn't in power. If any of you are angry over this, blame Stephen Harper and his assault on the people of Canada.

Why fix what ain't broke?

Remember Coca-Cola's big plans for a new taste?

This is just so typical of the type of governing that is going on these days! I am just surprised there wasn't an all out BAN of the song! That will be next because in some way it will be bad for our health!

Does this brain trust honestly believe they can hold a contest to find a new song, and pay the royalties to the new composer for cheaper than $500.00 a broadcast? Use your heads boys...don't turn away the rest of the country from your network

Not exactly sure what the propeller heads are thinking this time. Last time it was to get rid of Don Cherry. If it was not for HNIC and that theme song - CBC would have no ratings at all.

Somebody plse slap whoever at HNIC in the back of the head to wake them up. This song is a great jingle, always has been and always will be. ITS Canadian.

Support our troops

Considering that Cherry has about the same amount of air time as the theme song, I would much rather keep hearing the classic theme than to hear the trash that comes of Cherry's mouth, and for a lot less money too!

Scrapping that anthem is going to take away that feeling that every Canadian Hockey fan gets on game night. Unbeleivable, I cant understand why its even being questioned. There is no negotiation. It has to stay.

I'm afraid that without the song, I won't recognize the show anymore. I could switch to TSN and not know the difference. Hey, maybe THAT's the good thing to come out of all this. (I can't believe a pack of snot-nosed yuppies from Toronto can just give the boot to tradition. Look out, Grandma...)

if the composer will not sell the song outright to the CBC then scrap its usage... they never should have used it for so long without owning the rights first.

Please!! They can't be serious. That song is HNIC. They take it away, they rip the hearts out of people across Canada. I grew up with HNIC and when I hear them play that song I am reminded of a wonderful childhood and how excited I was for Saturday hockey to begin. CBC make it right, don't do this.
