Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?

How is renaming the NHL and the Stanley Cup to "new" names going to improve anything?

If anything they would detract from the great history of the game.

AM,

Bring in commentators from the States. Give me a break!

Do you ever watch a hockey game on Versus or NBC? The play by play is so atrocious!

They actually don't call the play, they blabber on during the play and ruin the game.

It'll cost CBC more money to publicize a contest than to buy the song for many years too come..

It's about time. Here are a few other changes they should make:

- fire Don Cherry, Ron McLean and Bob Cole and replace them with real sportscasters from the US

- get the NHL to change its name to the World Ice Hockey League as there are now players from many countries

- rename the Stanley Cup to the World Ice Hockey Championship trophy; this will allow the season to extend into August and permit countries such as Estonia and Latvia to play for the coveted trophy.

No doubt this will increase the ratings by at least 1000% as everyone rushes to watch the excitement

- disband the 6 Canadian teams as they don't stand a chance of ever winning the cup anyway. The franchises could then shift to hockey-mad cities such as Key West Florida, Biloxi Mississippi and Austin Texas.

Long live the CBC!

the cbc wants to save money? This is the same bunch who spend millions on programming that few watch. all the while demanding more of our tax dollars.

Get rid of CBC not just CBC sports let others do it, CTV, TSN and Sportnet do it. And if there ratings fall NO bailout fronm the taxpayers

Give me a break CBC! This theme is 'Canadiana'. Who doesn't want their son or grandson to grow up knowing this important part of our culture. To all the f&%&ing knobs out there calling for this to be removed - wake the f&@$#-up!! Get rid of this icon, and I remove you from my hockey watching.

To TSN - want to increase your hockey viewer, by this theme and screw the CBC!!!!!

HNIC "Song"? A song has WORDS! We're talking THEME here, people. . . just FYI.
HGA, 2008-06-06 21:15:46

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
gordholio, 2008-06-06 20:46:41

The NHL is fixed anyway, so why even be concerned about hockey anymore. The officials rig the games so that markets most in need of a "push" have success in the playoffs. The Stanley Cup will never come home to Canada EVER AGAIN folks, so why bother gewtting so worked up over the sport.

I think its time for a whole new fresh approach dump the Don Cherrys dump the theme song change the whole outlook if the NHL wants to compete with the big boys like the NFL, NBA, etc, they are going to have to change and adapt, even the NFL changed its whole Monday night football theme, get some new blood a new theme so Tiger woods has no ammunition to cut the NHL down its time for the NHL to be a leader and quit with the ugly step sister role
