TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."
A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.
The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.
Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?

If anything they would detract from the great history of the game.

Bring in commentators from the States. Give me a break!
Do you ever watch a hockey game on Versus or NBC? The play by play is so atrocious!
They actually don't call the play, they blabber on during the play and ruin the game.

- fire Don Cherry, Ron McLean and Bob Cole and replace them with real sportscasters from the US
- get the NHL to change its name to the World Ice Hockey League as there are now players from many countries
- rename the Stanley Cup to the World Ice Hockey Championship trophy; this will allow the season to extend into August and permit countries such as Estonia and Latvia to play for the coveted trophy.
No doubt this will increase the ratings by at least 1000% as everyone rushes to watch the excitement
- disband the 6 Canadian teams as they don't stand a chance of ever winning the cup anyway. The franchises could then shift to hockey-mad cities such as Key West Florida, Biloxi Mississippi and Austin Texas.
Long live the CBC!
