Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?

CBC is dead to me. May as well move all the games to TSN/NBC they did a much better job in the playoffs. Also move Don and Jim Huson over but please keep Ron and Kelly Rudy at CBC.

If CBC looses Don Cherry and or Ron Mcclean then hockey is doomed on CBC cause it won't be the same without everybody's favorite loud mouth mad suit dresser Don Cherry and his foot stool that created him Rom Mcclean. They can have Kelly Rhudy, He sucked when playing for the Los Angels Kings anyhow.

It's unfortunate that the CBC chose to separate itself from the Hockey Night in Canada Theme, and other cultural icons they helped establish.

Smart move by CTV to buy the Canadian National anthem out from under CBC.Rumour has it CBC is negotiating with Stompin Tom to buy the rights to his Hockey Song and that Tom will play it live on opening night.Don Cherry will be fired this year and jump to CTV with the song and CBC will hire Glen Healy to replace him with guest appearances by John Ferguson Jr.What a treat!Hockey Night in Canada is going to the dogs.

I'm glad someone stepped up to the plate, I'm just surprised CBC let it come this far. I mean, talk about your all-time PR nightmare, doesn't anyone at the CBC know what Canadian hockey fans want?? I don't accept their excuse that they couldn't afford to pay the lady for the song, didn't they just shell out millions and millions of dollars to get Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy?? I'm tired of this story and I'm tired of the CBC's continued attempts to sound like a victim, they aren't one, the fans are the victim here. I think they deserve all the chaos this must be creating for them internally.

Once again the CTV Network follows after the CBC's lead. They can always imitate but never seem to duplicate. The CTV/TSN tandem should concentrate on better camera work and technical excellence which they lack at the present. The televising of more games and the acquisition of a new (old?) opening hockey theme will not make them a better broadcaster. Too often these Cable Channels such as TSN concentrate on the Sizzle and not on the steak. Directing the camera away from skirmishes after the play is annoying and insulting to the viewers. Too often the director gives us some stupid blank stare of the coach or a Goaltender taking a swig of water while two or more players are going t it after the play. The crowd in attendance gets to see those activities why are they CENSORED from the viewers? This I believe is part of the STEAK and can be vastly improved! The HNIC theme is only the SIZZLE.

HNIC on the CBC will survive. Canadians are brought up on Saturday night hockey in the Winter months. That will not change too soon.

CTV should try to have an original idea some time instead of just buying up everyone else's properties. They started Sportsnet, but sold it to buy TSN. Then they took shows from ESPN, and even changed the logo to look more like ESPNs. They also bought all the Much Music channels, Bravo and A Channel. They buy their best shows from the States, or make Canadian versions of the same. So why were we surprised that CTV bought the theme to Hockey Night in Canada? That's all CTV is good at.

Nope - and you even included the WORD theme once or twice in your examples...!! Music alone

does NOT constitute a song!

According to dictionary.com:

–noun 1. a short metrical composition intended or adapted for **singing**, esp. one in rhymed stanzas; a **lyric**; a ballad.

2. a musical piece adapted for **singing** or simulating a piece to be sung: Mendelssohn's “Songs without Words.”

3. poetical composition; poetry.

4. the art or act of singing; vocal music.

5. **something that is sung.**

Who says we cain't not gab all educamated-like and culshured here? ;-)
