Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Shame on CBC. This should have been a no brainer. The bigwigs at the CBC weren't thinking and they certainly were not thinking when they decided to have this contest. They have played the number two Canadian hockey theme song several times during their broadcast over the years. "Big Leagues" by Tom Cochrane should have been the only other choice.I'm sure this would have been HNIC fans second choice if the CBC had of asked, but they didn't!

The CBC should have negotiated for the old theme. In the long run it would have cost less or at the least the same as this new one. Thuis is a classic case of cutting off their noses in spite of their faces.

I really don't care no more. CBC wreak Hockey Night in canada peroid. there forking out more money in the end instead of paying the extra as the Origional composer wanted. Would of saved a lot.

Now the winner wins a $100,000 or whatever it is plus extra royalites including a pertagace of sale sprofit etc... Yep shelling out more money at the end.

The origional composer wanted less than that.

I hope Lord Stanley comes and Haunts CBC excusuives until they either get the old theme song back or they die.

Yep. CBC dropped the ball. Not surprised. They played two "terrible" miniseries this past year plus are dropping Air Farce Live fromt he airwaves. I'm sure a new anthem will be okay, but people who grew up with that anthem their whole life will be like changing the national anthem...you'll never get completely over that.

oh and you guys can say what you like against Hockey...but real Men can skate and fight...not like you're boring-to-watch games of baseball and basketball. Besides, if Americans don't watch hockey who cares...its OUR sport not yours...

Does it really matter, after all, Wayne and Tiger Woods don't think anyone watches hockey. Wayne thinks everyone is watching poker and Tiger thinks everyone is watching golf. Oh well, ones an idiot the other a great golfer.

At first I was disappointed that CBC lost the rights, but now I don't really care.

It's not really that big a deal when you look at things going on in the world.

This might be dry tears from me, but I am greatly disappointed that HNIC is moving away from CBC and Saturday Nights. I realize that the world is dictated by greed and money and that somewhere lies the truth at why this derailed between composer and CBC. My belief is that CBC wants to follow suit by copying the NFL on Monday Night Football and with Sunday Night Football on NBC and make it more glamorous, upbeat and rocking. If you recall, years back MNF introduced Hank on Monday Nights and Sunday night Football on NBC has had a real upbeat intro as well. So maybe CBC does want to go the way of the upbeat Stompin Tom tune. The tune fits the bill and we as Canadians love it, no matter what age. But still for my entire life I will always associate that HNIC tune for the many Saturdays listening to Hewitt, Cole, Gallivan and Robson and many more of the great voices and hosts. Great that CTV came to the rescue and give the HNIC theme life once again and from their perspective, with the spread of games, they will keep the HNIC tune front and center. CBC is going to survive without the tune. I still shake my head at them letting go of Chris Cuthbert. Still don't get that one. CBC- if you are not going with Stomping Tom then buy back the HNIC theme from CTV. Don't go with some lame theme tune that you think can replace HNIC theme song and we the fan will think its hip or cool. CBC you have not done yourself many favors lately.
