Who will win the Conn Smythe Trophy?
Tue, May 13, 2008

Awarded annually to the player judged most valuable to his team during the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs, the Conn Smythe Trophy has only ever been awarded to 36 different players since it was introduced in the 1964-65 NHL season.

Multiple winners include names like Bobby Orr, Bernie Parent, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy.

Players from teams that lost the Stanley Cup, have won the Conn Smythe Trophy five times. Jean-Sebastien Giguere had that dubious honour in 2003.

With many outstanding players giving it their all in the semifinal stages, there are more than a few candidates.

Who do you think will win the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2008?

Osgood should win hands down and well written Evan I agree with what was said..

Chis Osgood should get it. He playing the season of his life. Hoe many shut outs in the playoffs. How many total? How many speciatalar saves has he made? How much has he contribute to the team as a whole? He's even set up a few key plays. Not many goalies have done that this year in the playoffs.

About time he gets reconanized for his hard work.

If Crosby plays the way he is playing right now next year than yeah he will get the Conn Smyth.

Craig, the moniker stays. Crosby's goals were beauties eh. Not, he skated up and down the ice spearing, slashing Draper all night, the ref watching and no calls. Gonchar crosschecking Holmstrom in the back and neck again no calls, Gill tackling players to the ice, while he was on the ice he grabbed a Detroit players leg and held on for dear life, again no calls. I guess the refs felt they could only call 10%. It was and is a joke, the league wants it to go seven and be the big epic battle. In reality, Pittsburg does not even belong on the ice with Detroit. I didn't even mention the fact that the Pittsburg players, led by Crosby, whined to the refs after every single whistle. And you want everyone to stop with the Crosby Crybaby Moniker, nope, it stays. If anything it is more prevelant than ever.

Hey look,

Crosby's got two goals. This after the game in which he mustered nearly 30% of his team's total shots. The 'crybaby' tag is so 2006. Time to think up a new one.

Osgood is deserving of the Conn Smythe but there is someone a little more deserving and this year it is Zetterberg.

I believe that Osgood is deserving of the Conn Smythe trophy.

I'm not putting down the Pens or the kid. Crosby will probably have the honour later down the road but Osgood has been underrated and dependable throughout the playoffs as a whole.

It would be nice to see Chris get some recognition after being forced to take a backseat to more famous netminders time and time again and working hard for miniscule wages(by todays standards anyway)

As for the Pens, I find it odd how little Hossa is mentioned. He's been a rather large part of the Pens yet all anyone talks about is Crosby. I'm not a Crosby hater or a fan, quite frankly I don't really even care about him that much but I find it amazing that he makes headlines when left scoreless...and they pretty much ignore his teammates when they get a game winning goal. Come on people? What are you thinking?

Also I can't stop laughing at the shear irony of a group of Pen's fans attacking singled out detroit fans for being "bandwagon jumpers".How many of you actually cared about the Pens when they were amongst the worst teams in the league? Give me a break.

I like the Pens, I respect the way a group of youngsters like them have been playing but a lot of you need to seriously consider the implications of your comments on here. I'm so tired of hearing comments starting with insults. just make the stupid comment on the thread and get on with it.
Evan, 2008-05-28 08:38:21

Wayne, what is your fascination with Crosby. Yeah so Malking has been invisible for the first two games. WHAT has Crybaby Crosby done, other than whine to officials? Make your point.

I for one am tired of the Penquins being compared to the "old" Oilers.... let alone to the Islanders of yester year...Crosby is decent... but no Gretzkty...Sid the kid will never score 50 in 50 (39) nor will he ever accumalate 200 pts in a season...being a betting man I say that Crosby will never raise Lord Stanley above his head... unless... he's traded to a better team *chuckles* Malkin is a coward to say the least...Roberts is an even bigger coward ...come on now ....fight the fight but fight it straight on ....Fleury should take up flamenco dancing cuz as a goalie he's so animated *LOL* the pens of yester year are long gone... as are the Oilers and Isles... no dominant team will ever come about again.. what with the " I want more "money"" scheme of things HELL if old Harold Ballard were still alive today he'd be winning cup after cup and without the help of the Europeans *LOL*...who the hell needs finess.....brawl it out like real men ...take no prisoners and if ya wind up with a bloody nose... suck it up and get the hell back in the game...let's bring back the series of "les canadiens vs. des bruins de boston" stan johnathan poundin out pierre bouchard...now that was hockey....center ice covered in blood..classic to say the least....todays hockey is for all the conformists out there who seem to feel they are in the "know" to that I say " have you ever laced up the skates.... let alone ... have you ever been punched in the face so hard that you blacked out and woke up with your panties up around yer ears...I know all the people who comment on this will know what I'm talking about... they never played a game in thier life but this being the net they feel compelled to reply.. to that I say... "suck it up buttercup"

I can't agree with any kind of generalizations about Russians, Swedes, Finns, or any of the other countries that play our great game. Just take a look at Detroit over the last decade and they haven't lacked grit or effort in the many non North Americans they have - Holmstrom, Franzen, Konstantinov, Federov, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom.

Malkin has been outstanding but it could be that he is genuinely tired, particularly playing at the intensity that the NHL playoffs demand. You have to remember he's young and European/Russian hockey generally have much shorter seasons/playoffs. I don't want to make excuses for him but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

That said, I think it's awesome the way Osgood has performed these playoffs and despite the defensive juggernaut that Detroit is, Ozzie has been outstanding when he's needed to be. Save percentages generally don't lie (although quality of shots aren't factored in) and having watched all the games in the playoffs, Ozzie has been outstandingly consistent. Like the Wings his game is quietly efficient. Conn Smythe winner!

Well now, who here is tired of Pete's immature and pointless remarks, not to mention his personal attacks. I for one think that Pete needs to get out more and meet someone, he is obviously lonely and is begging for attention. He sounds like an overweight 45 year old virgin still living in his Parents basement.

With that being said,

Zetterberg, Crosby, and Osgood are the choices i'd narrow it down to for the Conn Smythe
