Is Ron Wilson right about Sundin?
Thu, September 4, 2008

On one hand, Ron Wilson said he respects Sundin for not rushing back if he is unsure whether or not he wants to play -- adding that he would welcome back the longtime Leafs captain with open arms.

On the other hand, Wilson suggested that one of the problems with the sad-sack Leafs last year was a distinct lack of leadership.

And you don't have to be Howie Meeker to connect the dots there, that leadership is supposed to be one of the major responsibilities of the team captain.

Is Wilson right about the Leafs recent poor form?

Full story: Wilson suggests Mats was part of the problem

Oh, and one thing to add re: Greg's comment. How far is far? Winning the Cup is as far as you can go, and there are several active & ultimately successful coaches who have not gone there but taking your team to the dance is next closest and Ron Wilson has been there.

Who should really care where the new coach comes from? He has a proven & winning record as a coach and more improtantly, has taken nothing teams (young ones, I might add) further than expected. Call me nieve, but I think he's a good fit despite the fact his addition precedes that of a new and hopefully good GM (which contradicts the norm) and he will be integral in bringing the team along to achieve success over the coming years.

Ron Wilson isn't my first choice as coach for the Leafs, but my top choices are doing very well where they are (which is why they're the top choices) and just aren't available!

He's been to the Cup Final and won the Western Conference once, which is a lot more than Paul Maurice can write on his resume.

The Leafs don't have a year to wait out Burke, and regardless of what happens with him, they need a roster of better players. Wilson is apparently good with young players and has experience being a part of building teams up from the lower levels. I expect him to demand a better work ethic from whoever his players are on the Leafs over the next 4 years. This team has been coddled by its fat-cat management for a decade, and grown lazy from the low-expectations.

Whatever this has to do with anything: if you read the news, he was born in Windsor, Canada, played for the Leafs under Roger Neilson, and is a dual citizen of both Canada and the US. Lots of people have dual citizenship.

Let me get this Straight. THis is a poll to discuss how Ron Wilson will do as head coach. As a Leafs fan I say that this remains to be seen. Side conversations re: Gretzky/Crosby, The former Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc Countries etc are not part of the post. Try Staying on Topic. If you wanna vent about something other than the question at hand. DO IT ELSEWHERE!!! Have a great day

Sorry to disappoint you David but, here is the proof that Ron Wilson is an American.

You can look it up.

Position Defence

Height/Weight 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m)

175 lb (79 kg/12 st 7 lb) Pro clubs Minnesota North Stars

HC Davos

Kloten Flyers

Toronto Maple Leafs Nationality United States Born May 28, 1955 (age 53),

Windsor, Ontario, Canada NHL Draft 132nd overall, 1975

Toronto Maple Leafs WHA draft 176th overall, 1974

Houston Aeros Pro career 1977 – 1988

You must have some other Ron Wilson in mind but, I naturally assumed that you were referring to the new Leafs Head coach.

Cheers!

PS- I hope that you are not too disappointed or disillusioned finding out that the new coach of your Team is an American Gringo.

No, The Leafs should of taken advantage of the oppertunity they had with Brian Burke. I am a Leaf Fan, But I Really Dont Care For Ron Wilson.
Jason, 2008-06-10 17:53:20

What a joke the Leafs are. They are a Canadian team that hires and American coach who has never won anything or gone far in the playoffs. Sorry for you Leaf fans....I really feel sorry for you.
Greg, 2008-06-10 15:53:24

Leadership is the key to any organization, be it in sports, business, politics or a church. You can't turn garbage into gold.

The Laffs just don't have it.
Ted Greenfield, 2008-06-10 15:40:55

It could be a good choice if the players play well for him. It is better than what coach they have right now.
Tim, 2008-06-10 14:01:32

Another poor choice on the management end of TML. Maybe ask Toskala and Bell what kind of coach Wilson is?
