Is Ron Wilson right about Sundin?
Thu, September 4, 2008

On one hand, Ron Wilson said he respects Sundin for not rushing back if he is unsure whether or not he wants to play -- adding that he would welcome back the longtime Leafs captain with open arms.

On the other hand, Wilson suggested that one of the problems with the sad-sack Leafs last year was a distinct lack of leadership.

And you don't have to be Howie Meeker to connect the dots there, that leadership is supposed to be one of the major responsibilities of the team captain.

Is Wilson right about the Leafs recent poor form?

Leadership? They haven't had leadership from the board room down for long long time!!!!!

Robin I must have missed Sundin stating that he was satisfied with not winning a Stanley Cup. Where did you see / hear him make that comment? I'd like to see it for myself.

BTW - could you do us a favour and use a BIGGER font next time you post. I had difficulty READING YOUR POST!!

lmao

No Ron Wilson is "not" right about Sundin, This 3rd period blues have been around since 1968 in Toronto.

Captain by committee Sundin gets my vote.

Get rid of Taninbaum and Petty and you will have a winning team.

Koivu came back from cancer speaks for itself?? Okay, like his other choice of rolling over and dying was an option. Anyhow, Ron Wilson has just been handed the keys to a 1978 AMC Pacer with broken windows, a fuel leak and no brakes and has to start somewhere with a major overhaul. I love Sundin, but right now he is a cancer that must be removed. Wilson is putting that part of Leaf history behind the club, getting his hands dirty and beginning the hard work. I like the way he has been lumped in with Peddie et al, the guy hasn't even had the job during regular season play!! LOL!! Lets give him a chance, I like the fact that he is making these remarks, shows he is not afraid to make big, hard decisions. I am sure he has no intention of making a run for the playoffs this year, or even in the next 5 years. WHat would be the point, too many components are missing. He is in full rebuild, the first step is pulling out the engine and rebuilding it.

YES WILSON IS RIGHT.IF I COACHED OR PLAYED ON A NHL TEAM AND MY CAPTAIN WAS SATISFIED WITHOUT WINNING THE STANLEY CUP,THAN I WOULD NOT WANT YOU AS MY CAPTAIN.

Ron Wilson is allowed to shoot his mouth off all he wants............. right now!

He's done NOTHING so far. Let's remember Wilson's big mouth at the end of the year. I suggest Mr Wilson find some way to get the Leafs into the playoffs this year before he goes bashing one of the most consistant point producers in Leaf History!

I'm so peeved with Leaf Management! Wilson, Fletcher, Peddie - Shut your cake holes and concentrate on fixing YOUR SCREW-UPS!

Get us into the playoffs this year and then you can bash whomever you wish!

Brian Christoph - Sundin is just an above average hockey player?

Name me how many "above average" hockey players average a point a game over their 17 year career!

What a dumb comment you just made. Sundin also has World Championships and at least one Olympic Gold medal to his name! Certainly not the signs of a player that's just "above average".

Sundin has carried this team on his back for years! Management has never brought in anyone except maybe Mogilny that is good enough to play with Sundin. If it wasn't for Sundin especially over the last 5 or 6 years, the Leafs would NEVER have even had a run at a playoff spot!

JUST OVER A POINT PER GAME FOR HIS ENTIRE CAREER!

cappthook, 2008-09-05 13:05:24

I agree that the Leafs could use a "blood and guts" kind of guy to be captain and perhaps that Sundin was a little quiet to be captain of the Leafs. But I don't think you could question Sundin's consistant ability to lead by example.

I couldn't stop laughing when it was announced Sundin won a "leadership" award. Good player but not a Captain.

Kudos to Mr. Wilson. Someone who speaks the truth. The facts don't lie as he stated. We have had a void. I am tired of excuses and all them Leafs saying BUT he is a nice guy, Yea he may have been a great guy. However he was a weak leader and only an above average hockey player. Mats has never ever been a Superstar and wont ever be a Star.

Good for you Mr. Wilson and thank you for being honest.
