Is Ron Wilson right about Sundin? Thu, September 4, 2008
On one hand, Ron Wilson said he respects Sundin for not rushing back if he is unsure whether or not he wants to play -- adding that he would welcome back the longtime Leafs captain with open arms.
On the other hand, Wilson suggested that one of the problems with the sad-sack Leafs last year was a distinct lack of leadership.
And you don't have to be Howie Meeker to connect the dots there, that leadership is supposed to be one of the major responsibilities of the team captain.
How about Wayne Gretzky as GM and Mark Messier as coach? Seems to work well in Edmonton (Kevin Lowe and Craig McTavish)

King Clancy or Jacques Demers should be appointed as coach of the Leafs

Paul Maurice is surely not to blame. He has taken all the heat for the club, and spoken sincerely as he stood up and took the brunt of the Leafs problems solely on his shoulders. For shame on the rich white old men who fired him. For shame. Paul Maurice desverves more respect than this.

I think they should do a reality show and we could phone in and pick the guy the fans want, while were at it lets get a general manager also and a new team so when there in last place next year we can finally blame it on ourselves as there is nobody else left to blame

Craig Hartsburg should coach the Leafs provided he's given free rein to do it.
Perhaps Maurice could become coach of the Soo Greyhounds. He should fit in pretty well as this is where he's from.

An accountant! It's the only person MLSE would trust.

I really feel sorry for Leaf fans (the sane ones) who realize that they have the worst ownership of any team in the NHL.
Like MTL, the Leafs should be a cornerstone franchise in the league- they are instead a disgrace.
People old enough to remember the 70's thought things could never get worse then Harold Ballard - how wrong we all were.
The Leafs future - see Chicago Cubs for the past 90-years.
The "perfect" coach for the Leafs - heck he'd be a good GM for them as well - Mike Keenan. Proven winner, proven to get rid of dead-wood (which the Leafs have plenty of) and not afraid to kick even a "star" in the butt.

The coach/GM for the job depends upon what the focus will be. If the teacher's union wants to build a good team for the future, they need someone thick skinned who can handle the screaming hordes of fans and sports columnists who will bemoan every move. Maurice seemed to handle this well although JFJ didn't prove himself.
If the focus is to get the team to overachieve, make the playoffs every year and then bow out, well guys like Burns are as good as any.
It just depends upon whether the union has the cajones to start a serious rebuilding process or whether the stopgap measures of the last 15 years will have to continue.
