Is Ron Wilson right about Sundin?
Thu, September 4, 2008

On one hand, Ron Wilson said he respects Sundin for not rushing back if he is unsure whether or not he wants to play -- adding that he would welcome back the longtime Leafs captain with open arms.

On the other hand, Wilson suggested that one of the problems with the sad-sack Leafs last year was a distinct lack of leadership.

And you don't have to be Howie Meeker to connect the dots there, that leadership is supposed to be one of the major responsibilities of the team captain.

Is Wilson right about the Leafs recent poor form?

Full story: Wilson suggests Mats was part of the problem

For starters I think TO should re-sign Mats if they can, but I also think it would help if they would appoint a Canadian with a big heart to be captain. I don't know who that should be but it has to start with that. It doesn't have to be the best player as long as he has a Canadian HEART.

Disgruntled fan ....as you know Mats hads played with no and I repeat no bonified wingers in his tenure with the Leafs as so many people have pointed out on this blog in the past . As for Alfie he has Spezza and Heatley ...geeze ...let me see, whos had the better go of it. I will admit Alfie is a good player but has had a much better run at it than Sundin.Just think if Mats had Heatley and Spezza, but he doesn't and keeps on going with decent point totals.

As for Kevin until your Sens win 11 or more cups ( as professionals) whicjh they have only won 1 call me then you can beak off.

Oh and you scraped into the playoffs remember after being rated as a team possibly breaking the Habs 8 loss record . Gimme a break.

We'll see you in the fall too . Have a great summer !
GO LEAFS GO!, 2008-05-14 08:40:50

go laffs go nut

You dont see how stupid you look bashing a team for making the playoffs and making it to the finals something your sad, old pathetic team cant do.

Three straight years without a plyoff spot, 41 years since a cup final. They wont make the playoffs for 4 or 5 years at least while they " rebuild " this joke of a team. So thats 2012 or 2013 when they finally make the playoffs and will be 8 years out of the playoffs.

So keep lipping off. you are making my point for me lol.

How about Axel Rose....he can scream and his best years are behind him, plus with him behind the bench, some of the punks will be off the streets and go to a hockey game, plus he's probabally someone Tucker and McCabe can relate too, so with him as coach were making toronto safer, and keeping the players happy, and they still won't make the playoffs... 2 out of 3 ain't bad...hey meatloaf might be a good coach also!!!

The next GM will decide. If Toronto doesn't have a GM in place for this season, Fletcher will just hire an interim coach.

No full time coach will be hired before a new GM.

I'm not sure that there is any point in posting this in response to GO LEAFS GO! But I'll do it anyway, prefacing my comments by saying I am not a Senators fan.

Comments such as "couldn't carry Sundin's jockstrap" in reference to Alfredsson is simply pointless, and exposes the writer as someone who has a hard-line love affair with one team, and a monumental hate for the other. With no room for compromise. Because, the stats do not bear him out.

Sundin has played 17 seasons and Alfredsson 12 so total stats are a pointless comparison. Over 1305 regular season games, Mats has averaged .4 goals a game, .6 assists per game, and roughly 1 point per game played.

Daniel, over 790 games played, has average .4 goals per game, .7 assists per game, and 1.2 points per game.

In playoff action, Mats has played 83 games and averaged .4 goals a game, .7 assists, and .9 points per game.

Daniel has played 115 playoff games and has averaged .5 goals per game, .4 assists, and .9 points per game.

From this vantage point, these are two very similar and very good players.

Is it not possible in your world to drop the useless flag-waving rhetoric and just post comments based upon facts and not emotion?

I keep on wondering why everyone is so consumed with this subject. There is no quick fix for this team. People are expecting that a new President - GM - Coach combination is going to ressurect this franchise. Don't get your hopes up Leaf fans. It will be quite a while before T-dot ever competes for a cup again.

First of all, where are the prospects? Mediocrity has ensured that the Leafs are not bad enough to acquire high draft picks.

Second, the no-trade clauses have killed any hope for the next few years. Can't trade away the useless contracts, can't compete in the free agent market, doesn't make financial sense to buy them out.

Third, after Sundin and Kaberle where is the skill?

Yes the Marlies are doing extremely well, but the skill level there is AHL calibre not NHL. Toskala shows talent, but the rest of the supporting cast are more suited to 3rd and 4th lines.

Nothing will change as long as the entity known as the Teacher's Fund hold the reigns to this team.
Voice of Reason, 2008-05-13 12:12:33

Kevin ... THE FINALS? THEY WIN? ...NO!!!!! SO YOUR STILL LOSERS TOO.....ALL THE HIGH PRICED HELP AND NO CUPS. YOU GOT THE BEST TEAM MONEY CAN BUY AND NOW NO COACH(LIKE THE LEAFS) A GOALIE CONTROVERSY(LIKE THE LEAFS) A SWEDISH CAPTAIN(LIKE THE LEAFS)(WHO COULDN'T CARRY SUNDIN'S JOCKSTRAP) AND THE COMPARISONS DON'T END THERE SO BUCK UP BABY YOUR SeNOTers aren't so great after all.
GO LEAFS GO!, 2008-05-13 08:55:15

Disgruntled Fan

Yes its all the loser Laff fans have, cant think of anything new to use so they just beat it to death. Yawn LOL

At least Alfredson took the Sens to the cup finals, whats Sundin done in Toronto in his 13 or 14 years ? Nothing, he isnt a leader, any team he has won on ( Sweden ) he wasnt the captain LOL
Kevin, 2008-05-12 22:50:12

I agree Kevin. That "Krusty The Clown" thing is as old and as stale as last week's bread. And you get the impression that, every time someone uses it, they think it's being uttered for the first time and that, somehow, it's a measure of just how clever they are.

As for the coach of the Leafs, does it really matter? Whoever it is, and whoever turns out to be the GM, is fatally stuck with those four bloated contracts for anywhere from 2 to 4 more years! Buying them out is not really an option as each is over 26 so that would cost the Leafs two-thirds of each salary spread out over several years. Not a good option when trying to keep cap pace with the top teams.
