Did the Jays make the right move by releasing Frank Thomas?
Mon, April 21, 2008

The Blue Jays and the Big Hurt parted company on Sunday. The Jays didn't want Frank Thomas to stick around and become The Big Pain.

The not-so-stunning development occurred the morning after the Jays told Thomas that he would not be in the lineup as the designated hitter but would be riding the pine on the bench.

On Saturday, Thomas was incensed.

"I didn't expect this at all," he said. "This is a shocker. It's terrible. Don't tell me I can't help this team win.

Were the Blue Jays right in releasing Thomas? Does Thomas still have some juice left to help out another baseball team? Have your say in our forum.

He led the J's in hitting and thats an ok season?

Last year is irrelevant anyway. He wasn't producing this year and they need production and can't wait to see IF it materializes. It was best for both parties. Thomas still gets paid and he can go work some place else and get paid too. The J's can try and find someoen to produce internally or externally. Thomas wasn't putting out world series team numbers for the position and wasn't willing to platoon with other players (mentor someone into his replacement) Maybe Thomas should take a re-evaluation of his age and were he is at in his career. He might extend it if he thinks about helping others get better with his skills and wisdom rather than just saying I'm still the man, which he is not. He doesn't want to fade away so he will just vanish instead.

Everyone gets old.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s he was probably worth $10m but not now. Not sure how you could justify keeping him with his current output.

Yes they did. He had an ok season last year. A DH isnt worth $ 10 million a year at least not with his stats.

Matt Stairs can pick up the slack at DH. He had a good year.

Good luck Frank I hope you get picked up by another team, I dont think it was anything personal, just the money side of the business.
