Did the Jays make the right move by releasing Frank Thomas?
Mon, April 21, 2008

The Blue Jays and the Big Hurt parted company on Sunday. The Jays didn't want Frank Thomas to stick around and become The Big Pain.

The not-so-stunning development occurred the morning after the Jays told Thomas that he would not be in the lineup as the designated hitter but would be riding the pine on the bench.

On Saturday, Thomas was incensed.

"I didn't expect this at all," he said. "This is a shocker. It's terrible. Don't tell me I can't help this team win.

Were the Blue Jays right in releasing Thomas? Does Thomas still have some juice left to help out another baseball team? Have your say in our forum.

No dh's make close to 10 million a year fool. Only the full time every day players. he had less than 100 rbi's and less than 30 home runs. That is hardly getting the job done as the guy that was suppose to put up big numbers but he didnt.

His best days have been behind him for sometime now. That is why the White Sox let him go.

duh wayne get with the program numb nut, you are clueless.

Well duh pete. Just went through the 2007 stats. seems of all the players around 100 RBI's and 25 HR. Thomas was about middle of the salary range. There were 4 below 1 million but 6 were between $12M and $16M. so apperently they did get their bang for the buck for those stats LAST YEAR.

Yes its the right move. Thomas should have retired after he hit his 500 home run.

Good guy but has lost his bat speed and cant catch up to fast balls any more.

Well duh lol. Its called getting your bang for your buck numb nut. Thomas isnt producing this year.

Last year he had under 30 homers and under 100 rbis. He didnt produce enough to warrant his 8,9 or 10 million dollar contract.

Its just another of JP's mistakes thinking Thomas could produce enough offence to make up for the shortage of there pitching staff.

They should have made this decision back in spring training. To do it at this point in the season is puzzling. I like the Big Hurt but he should be a part time dh at best.

He seems like a class act so I wish him all the best catching on with another team.

Fox sports has a differnet take on this.

If it was batting, they said Scuturo is doing far worse. The Jays are last in the AL in slugging and they just got rid of their slugging leader who has proven time and time again he improves thoughout the season and comes through in the clutch. They claim its all about money and things need to change at the top before they change on the field. Its an interesting stance.

I was a Thomas fan, and I understand why he did what he did, but the Jays did the right thing. He was fading at the plate and showing his age on the bases. I'd give his spot to Stairs or a young farm hand.

Of course, that is not enough for the goofy Toronto media, who are now trying to stir the pot by asking Jays players if they would like Bonds to take his place on the team (saw it on RSNet and TSN). Where the heck did that come from?

I thought Jimmy was gone but he just changed him name to kevin. Idiot, apperently he was the best blue jay at the plate. Moron and not the highest paid.

This year was the problem. But your more impressed with your name calling than your ability to understand sports.

wayne no fighting

Here are Thomas's stats from last year idiot. 155 games played, 26 home runs and 95 rbi's, wow very impressive for a dh that was making 8 or 9 million isnt it clown lol

Wow leading the Jays, no one really had a good year. As a team and individually no one really stood out. Thomas stats werent what you need from a full time dh, less than 100 RBI's and 30 or so home runs ? Get real hardly impressive numbers for a veteran, they would be good for a young and up and coming player but not some that was expected to produce more especially when Wells was struggling with his shoulder injury.
