Should fighting be banned from hockey?
Sat, October 4, 2008

Should there be fighting in the NHL? As the hockey season approaches, this question, once again, is being asked.

Some say that hockey without fighting is like the Ice Capades. I don't know what they're talking about. I've taken my granddaughter to the Ice Capades, and the fairy ice princess throws a pretty good punch.

We all know the great Rodney Dangerfield line about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

What's your opinion on fighting in hockey? Should it stay or should it go. Have your say in our forum.

A fight for hockey

you might attribute last year sens losing to intimidation but I'm starting to think with the sens its something else, who knows what.

Explain first qtr of season the Sens were a juggernaught making all other teams look second rate. Then something happened and they dis appeared and finally go out four straight to the pens. I don't know about that intimidation thing, i think its more internal.

I've noticed a lot of stats being run by the commentators and I'm sure the same by the coaches.

Most goals are being scored on special teams when there is a 5/4 advantage. That means penalties cost you goals and wins. So teams are starting to try reduce dumb, intimidating penalties and since the league is pushing to call more of these i think you will see less of what you are talking about. the goons are getting less and less in the league and the hockey players are increasing. The trend is going away from what you guys are holding on to so dearly. (11 seconds out of a 60 minute game)

just a little hint for future. money from government is called welfare, it means you can't afford to do it yourself.

fighting has always been part of the game and always will be. i will stop watching hockey if fighting is banned

Dont go saying all the people in Hamilton are Leaf fans. Im sure there are some but not all.

Yes fighting does play a part in winning. Big, tough teams can intimidate smaller less physical teams like the Ducks did to the Sens last year.

If you are a Leaf fan just watch next year and see how Sundin does ( if he comes back ) now that the Leafs dont have a tough guy ( traded Belak at the deadline to the Panthers ) to protect him. He will be run at every shift and he will take tons of cheap shots.

So the team couldn't aford the arena themsleves (Fans don't pay enough for that) and you think that it wasn't financial reasons for the teams failure. Interesting.

So apperently the rest of the world doesn't play hockey. And fighting isn't needed in them becasue it isn't hockey?

What are you yammering about clues?

Yes i saw bobby orr in tons of fights.

Did you notice that attendance is stagnant or down. Ratings are down. did you ever think people aren't watching now for a reason. Did you think the polls saying that people don't like fighting is going up, not down.

Like I said, you guys give no arguements to keep fighting other than tradition which apperently doesn't exist either, its only recent tradition (oxymoron)

I do watch hockey. I also notice if a fight occurs its only 10 seconds of the 60 minutes of hockey, so I wouldn't miss it if it means I will see more and better hockey.

The AHL attendance record was for a year and Copps never gets a sellout. It is an NHL size arena for AHL size crowds and we had to discount tickets to get more sales.

First you compare attendance figures from hockey to baseball.

Now you are comparing NHL hockey to european style hockey ( Olympics ) ? Dang dude you are 1 confused person.

The rinks are bigger in europe so there is hardly any body checking, there fore there will be less fighting. If you fight in european hockey you get thrown out of the game. You arent given any suspensions.

Dang do you ever have a clue what the heck your rambling on about ?

Winnipeg and Quebec City didnt lose there teams because of a lack of fan support.

They lost there teams because the governments wouldnt help finance new arenas. There buildings were outdated and to small.

They didnt have the private luxury boxes or enough seating.

I dont know what news papers to get at the city of Hamilton job you say you work at, but you are not getting the kind of information from them to say these ridiculous things that make no sense at all.

Hockey is and always will be a mans game. If you cant handle the fights, dont watch.

The big difference in todays game compared to the 50's and 60's is that back then all the stars like Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe etc could fight there own battles.

Todays stars like Crosby and Malkin need big George Laraque to protect them from role players with very limited skills that play a few minutes a game and only intentions they have are to go out and run the stars and try to hurt them.

That is why fighting is needed. Watch a game from start to finish instead of just the high lights on TSN.

Being from Canada the west or east coast makes me have everything in common with my fellow Canadians.

More in common with Americans was a stupid comment.

I know for a fact the final game was a sellout, and did set a AHL record.

Stop acting like a know it all, you know nothing except the rubbish you make.

Only holes are in your head. Wow the stuff you say is mind boggling.

Must be real lonely in your world so you make up crazy stuff and try passing it on as fact lol.

Wake up and smell the coffee!
