Should fighting be banned from hockey?
Sat, October 4, 2008

Should there be fighting in the NHL? As the hockey season approaches, this question, once again, is being asked.

Some say that hockey without fighting is like the Ice Capades. I don't know what they're talking about. I've taken my granddaughter to the Ice Capades, and the fairy ice princess throws a pretty good punch.

We all know the great Rodney Dangerfield line about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

What's your opinion on fighting in hockey? Should it stay or should it go. Have your say in our forum.

A fight for hockey

When you fight, you receive a game misconduct. What's so hard to understand about that? It's current reality for minor hockey, university, collegiate, and all international levels. Only in Canadian junior and professional leagues are players relegated to a mere 5-minute penalty.

To Gordholio, Hammertime or Wayne, or anyone else who likes the pull the "wuss" card, this is what eclipses hockey from minds of the mainstream American sporting public. This sport is as disregarded as WWE or roller derby, and we know it doesn't deserve this. Give hockey the credit it deserves; it's more than able to flourish on its own merits! But that said, and someone still "wants to go", then fill your boots! You've got plenty of time back in the locker room to stew on it later.

Hockey is a business and when fans pay good money to see Ovenchkin play, especially on the road the away teams want to see him play just as much as the home teams, so when a fourth line guy sidelines him he won't last too long in the league and lose his big paycheck becasue he just lost many teams a lot of attendance revenue. That is more a deterent than some goon and a fight.

Oh and another thing. All other sports are growing in viewers except hockey (even in canada), which trails bowling in the US. Much of that is attributed to fighting. So people are doing what you say. If it keeps up you might find less hockey to watch. But hey you can check out the fighting in UFC.

Why not just ban the game all together? People don't want to see guys race to the other end to get the puck, don't want to see checking, don't want fighting. YOUR KILLING THE GAME. They know the risks, they chose the proffession. Thats why they get paid the big bucks. Fighting not only keeps guys in line but it also spurs the team when down a few.

Fighting not allowed all through your hockey career until you get paid, then its necessary. How?

You played it all your growing up life without out it, must not have been hockey you were playing?

So how did Ovenchkin make it through the lower levels were fighting wasn't allowed?

Hockey is a rough and physical game and sometimes emotions run high where 1 or 2 players want to fight and let there anger out. I say if both are willing let them go. No one is forcing anyone to fight.

The game will get dirtier with more serious injuries. The stick work will increase and so will the cheap shots. When there wasnt the instigator rule, hockey was a clean sport where the opponents had respect for each other. Look how the game has changed just by adding the instigator penalty. The cheap shots are getting to the point where we see a few every game, players dont have the same respect for each other since the instigator penalty was brought in. Now imagine how rough and dirty it will be when them 4th liners feel they can do as they please hiding behind there visors and not have to be looking over there shoulder wondering when a Brashear will be out on the ice to settle things.

We all hear that NHL is a business, when you have assets like a Ovenchkin you need to protect him from players with very little talent ( 4th liners ) that only play a few minutes a game and has intentions to go out and run the stars and try to hurt them.

If the Capitals didnt have Brashear to protect Ovenchkin he wouldnt make it through a season.

You can always take up a hobby like painting wayne if hockey is to violent for you, no one is putting a gun to your head to make you watch.

of course fighting should not be banned, stupid question.Anyone who thinks fighting should be banned does not understand the game, at least n a pro level, and they most certainly will not have played the game.

Its a tough sport, if it's too much for you, too bad.

try needlepoint

Get over it.

If hockey is too much of a manly game for you go watch poker then you wuss.

Fighting has always been part of hockey at the NHL level and always will be.

You probably faint at the sight of blood you wimp lol.

It amazes me, every other sport has zero tollerance for fighting and they are just as physical if not more than hockey but people actually say its needed and necessary in hockey.

Protection-what a joke

Part of the game-yet not in the rule books

History-Ya recent, when it started and early on it was certainly not so drop this one

Relieve tension- more like hate losing and can't beat them at hockey so we will fight instead

You take fighting out of the game and you'll get a lot of dirty players. How else will they get out their frustration?

It's like some of the "European" players; most don't fight, but they like to do the stickwork, which can be much more dangerous.

If a guy wants to fight another guy, let them go. Who's it going to hurt?

When it gets ridiculous and you have a brawl, then hand out the suspensions, but not for just a one-on-one, single fight.
