Should fighting be banned from hockey?
Sat, October 4, 2008

Should there be fighting in the NHL? As the hockey season approaches, this question, once again, is being asked.

Some say that hockey without fighting is like the Ice Capades. I don't know what they're talking about. I've taken my granddaughter to the Ice Capades, and the fairy ice princess throws a pretty good punch.

We all know the great Rodney Dangerfield line about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

What's your opinion on fighting in hockey? Should it stay or should it go. Have your say in our forum.

A fight for hockey

Wayne you idiot, Ovechkin doesn't need Brashear, he can stand up for him self! Sur teams can try to nslow him down just like the Montreal Canadiens did, they threw some very hard hits and broke his nose! Yet he still gets four goals! Who cares about bowling one bit, you thow a ball at a pin! How entertaining is that! Not very.

As for fighting in the NHL, look at what Avery was doing to Broudeur the other night! Martin should have taken him out. As to Maggie, the former avid hockey fan in Sarnia, hockey was always part of the game and always allowed.

To all you pro fighting, anti american guys. I guess you yearn for the day of no us teams, playing the same team 22 times a season, all canadian players (not the best in the world, because they will play where the money is now, Europe with large paying populations and no fighting). Smaller arenas and only hockey games on CBC because they will be the only ones who can afford to show it because its subsidized.

Just so you know poker brings in more money than the NHL, even in Canada (TSN and ESPN found that out in the last strike).

You all seem to forget that w live in the largest country in the world with only 30 million in population (Some euro and US cities have that)

By the way pete the two proofs of who invented hockey are old paintings and the american painting of hockey is older than the Canadian one.

Wow the best player in the NHL played in Russia, where they actually play hockey and don't fight. But you still say its necessary to have it. Classic arguement.

Yep UFC is growing because you can see the two best trained fighters fight, not two skaters who have never been trained or train at all for fighting go at it for 10 seconds

The US (300 million possible viewers) is where the money is which is what you have to get paying to get the best. If you can't get the money, less people will provide it (tv or live) so you will get even less hockey and the quality will go down. Is that your goal?

Yes all arenas always sell out regardless of wo they play. What ever. Attendance goes upi when a star is palying like Crosby or Ovechkin (more revenue) even on the road (especially on the road). Micheal Jordan use to draw $5 million extra revenue for the home team (not chicago) where ever he played.

American Families don't like violence, american men love it. Do you realize you have the ptoential for 4 times more revenue if a family attends a game as opposed to the Adult male.

Ever go to a sporting event in the States Football (violent) basketball all have full families in attendance. Hockey and UFC have men.

Fighting in Rugby results in many games suspension.

We aren't talking about rough play morons, just fighting.

Wayne, I call BS on your claim that Bowling has more viewers in the US than hockey. Prove it, where are you getting your stats? I can't even remember the last time I saw bowling on TV. You sir are spewing more garbage than George "know it all" O'Leary or that Amerian Idiot Jimmy and I want proof you big liar.
Pete, 2008-04-15 15:16:45

For those of you that want to watch hockey but not the physical play. You can watch the european leagues. The NHL was founded on the rough physical play. Anyone ever watch a lacross game?? Makes the NHL look like it was created for children. How about rugby?? Do you guys piss and moan about these sports too?
Dwain, 2008-04-15 14:42:59

Wayne, who gives a flying puck whether bowling is more popular than hockey in the US. Except for maybe Betman. The fact that Americans like bowling more than hockey just proves what morons they are. Americans don't like violence and fighting, please!! That is so assinine, they have by far the greatest number of gun related deaths in the world per capita, they go to war at the drop of a hat. Lets admit it, the reason hockey numbers aren't great in the States is because they did not invent the game number one and number two, they just aren't very good at it. I could go on but thats enough for now.

You dont have a career until you are actually getting paid to do work.

Fighting goes on in junior to. Thats how some players make it to the pro's by being a tough guy and standing up for his teams stars that cant stand up for themselves.

All leagues below junior should have zero tolerance.

There is no way fighting will ever be stopped especially at the pro level. Junior might be able to limit it with long suspensions though.
Wayne, 2008-04-15 11:59:46

Home teams want there rivals stars for attendance ? Are you for real ? They support there home team and go to see there own players not a visiting teams.

Dude you can give Peter Puffer a run for the money with the most retarded comments lol.
Kevin, 2008-04-15 11:41:36

wayne ( little w )

In case you arent aware of this, Ovenchkin played his whole life in Russia where they dont know what a body check is or means.

Fighting in the NHL has always been there. As for the dumbass comment fighting turns off americans thats funny since UFC is a sport growing in leaps and bounds. America is a very violent country and no one ever turns there head or leaves the game when a fight starts.

Try watching a game with an american team, the fans go nuts.

Hockey isnt big in the states because they cities that shouldnt have a team. Tampa Bay is the 1 exception but there are alot of Canadians that go to Florida for the winter that support them.
