Should fighting be banned from hockey?
Sat, October 4, 2008

Should there be fighting in the NHL? As the hockey season approaches, this question, once again, is being asked.

Some say that hockey without fighting is like the Ice Capades. I don't know what they're talking about. I've taken my granddaughter to the Ice Capades, and the fairy ice princess throws a pretty good punch.

We all know the great Rodney Dangerfield line about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

What's your opinion on fighting in hockey? Should it stay or should it go. Have your say in our forum.

A fight for hockey

This comment is FULLY MODERATED.

8 Canadian teams?!! so with 82 regular season games you play each team 11 times. Boy that would be a great league.

First of all we dont care to hear about your personal life no matter how made up and boring it is. Second, this is about hockey ( Canadian game ) not baseball ( american game ).

You have to much time on your hands to be making up crazy stories and then typing them in here.

Yawn, can you tell a story again tonight, it will help me fall asleep lol.

No I am not jimmy, notice no insults, actual facts given and he likes fighting and will threaten you to prove it. Don't miss him.

What arguement have you given other than tradition.

Very few hockey leagues in Canada and the world condone fighting but you say its a mainstay and needed. All those leagues thrive and are growing in attendance but the NHL is not.

Hamilton has a pro hockey team (i work for the city of hamilton). It gets very poor attendance and in fact won the championship last year to half ful audiences in the final. Those hamilton fans are 45 minutes from buffalo who have had a team since the 70's and have almost gone belly up three times and until the last two years had dismal attendance. we had a pre season gmae last year and 2000 HOCKEY FANS showed up. Don't be too sure on expanding Canadian fan base and it supporting those high salaries that would keep the best players here and not in the growing europe leagues.

Yesterday you said Canadian players WERENT even the best in the world. Today you do. Whats going on in here, people like wayne, pete puck head, peter puffer cant remember what they said the day before. This is like the twi-light zone.

Or is it they use different names and post dumbass comments and cant remember what they said with which name ? lol.

Get a clue you 3 stooges ( wayne no fighting, pete puck head and peter puffer ). You guys can fight over who gets to be larry curly and moe lol.

Just to put things in further perspective.

Went to a blue jay game the other day. Tickets cost more for the Yankees and Bosox (Apperently its notthe blue jays who draw the fans but the opponents, wow who would have thought a star from another team brings in fans). The game was in the afternoon, so i could take my son and grandpa came too. (NHL only used to play at night, well past my sons bed time but The US pushed for afternoon games, baulked at by canadian fans as us pushing things on us.) Beer cost us $10 a can (something not bought by empty sold seats, often seen at Leaf games). But another thing we spent on that we would not of if it was just dad and me. Overpriced jersey and hat, icecream and popcorn. All pressured into by a smiling young grandson. I noticed a lot of fans wearing jerseys, many adults, who will wear the same one for 20 years. i will take my son again next year, hey he will have grown out of this years jersey.

Ya lets not cater to all families, just adult males.

Wow 51 % from 4 times as many american teams as Canadian. Your arguement is weak and lame. You are clueless.

Give it up, you cant argue Canada supports the NHL. More Canadian teams in Winnipeg and Hamilton will put the NHL's revenue to well over 50 % from only 8 Canadian teams.

americans never have and never will support hockey the way bettman thinks they will. Its a waste of time trying to get americans into hockey when hockey isnt even top 4 in sports south of the border.

Fighting has been a part of hockey all the way back to the 50's. American is the most violent country in the world, they love rough sports ( NFL, boxing UFC ). The fighting thing is just an excuse the league uses because them sissies want fighting out. Who cares what americans want or think, its a Canadian game, if they dont like how we play they can go watch as wayne says bowling and poker then.

Wayne, are you sure your not Jimmy in disguise. He was an American Idiot who used to grace these pages with his rhetoric. Your numbers have nothing to do with your statements. The fact ESPN dropped hockey in favor of Cards doesn't mean it generates more revenue.
pete, 2008-04-16 08:24:04

Don 51% comes from the US. Ever try cut a companies revenue in half and see what happens? Our market is saturated, the US is barely touched.

Yes Canada has the best players in the world, but if you can't pay them more than europe, thats were they will play.

The poker thing, i'm sure its out there. ESPN dropped hockey after the strike and permanently replaced it with poker which it ran for the first time to replace the lost hockey spots. TSN did the same but they continued to run both and bid much lower on the NHL contract. Bettman has taken a lot of heat for it.

These are all the arguements actually being used by sports stations. did you notice the latest poll on fighting which sparked this comment section. you are startingto be in a minority.
wayne, 2008-04-15 23:51:02

I forgot 1 more thing. Canada does have the best hockey players in the world. By saying we dont shows us you are really an american and jealous of us.

Don, 2008-04-15 20:12:39

Where do you get your information from ? That speel that poker brings in more money than hockey is absurb. Tell all of us that doubt you where you got that info from so we can check it out for ourselves.

You are no doubt american posing as a Canadian with to much time on your hands so you go to these comment areas to make up things.

Here is a fact for you, the 6 Canadian teams bring in 49 % of the NHL revenue. So by your comments bring in more Canadian teams will hurt the league.

Some of the things you say shows us you have no clue what you are saying.

Try sticking to cold hard facts, not made up stuff. You look like a fool making such silly comments.
