Should fighting be banned from hockey?
Sat, October 4, 2008

Should there be fighting in the NHL? As the hockey season approaches, this question, once again, is being asked.

Some say that hockey without fighting is like the Ice Capades. I don't know what they're talking about. I've taken my granddaughter to the Ice Capades, and the fairy ice princess throws a pretty good punch.

We all know the great Rodney Dangerfield line about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

What's your opinion on fighting in hockey? Should it stay or should it go. Have your say in our forum.

A fight for hockey

Pete before the NHL lockout poker was trying to get on TV but no one would buy into it thinking who would watch poker (its like darts, etc) but the strike left a huge hole they were not prepared to fill and they scrambled and said yes to poker. Rating went way up (it wasn't small) over hockey on ESPN. Bettman had just negotiated a huge contract with ESPN and was now trying to get costs down with the lockout. He got costs down and lost ESPN. That is why he took the heat. No one forsaw it. ESPN, Bettman, corporate america.

pete puck head

I guess you havent heard of something called merchandise eh butthead ? Or money from sales of beer, food ?

Advertising does bring in money, but its far from the 1 and only way idiot.

Players jerseys etc make millions and millions a year.

Are you the same person wayne ( little w ). Both seem to say the same things lol.

Why do you keep saying 8 Canadian teams and play each other 11 times ? Where did you get that from ?

Look how many american teams are struggling. There are some good markets in the USA yes, and some not so good. Even Detroit isnt selling out there games and they were the top team in the league and in a proven hockey market. Philly, Colorado, NY, Boston, Minnesota are solid hockey markets. Places like Carolina, New Jersey, Islanders, Phoenix, LA Kings, St.Louis, Florida Panthers, Buffalo, Chicago, Washington have all struggled in the past when they werent winning.

Canadian teams still sell out even when they struggle look at Toronto lol.

Baseball is american and cant compare it to hockey. So stop trying. Thats like comparing apples to oranges.

I wil give you this info, when the Blue Jays were winning the 2 world series they were selling out every game, 50,000 since then they have averaged between 20,000 - 25,000. Leafs havent won in 41 years and still sell out and cant get tickets unless you go to a scalper or want to sit in the nose bleeds.

Yes the money comes from advertising. Which comes from ratings (how many people watch). The higher the ratings the more they can charge for commercial time and the more advertisers will pay.

Ratings went up during poker instead of the expected down due to loss of hockey (nobody expected poker to rate so high) notice how its always on. 3 oclock, 5 oclock 11 oclock, saturday, monday sunday, 365 days of the year (not seasonal)

Know why. Everyone plays and relates to gambling and cards, men and women. Only men watch hockey.

just a little tidbit on baseball (US) and Hockey (CDN).

First recorded Hockey game in Canada was in 1850 by british troops stationed in Nova Scotia.

In 1850 Canada already had a baseball league.

Wayne, don't know if you would understand if I or someone else tried to explain it to you. The money comes from advertising period. The Networks pay the applicable leagues for the rights to broadcast certain events. It could have been contract negotiations,it could be the head of the network didn't like hockey or Cheers, or Monday Night Football (ABC) etc. My point is Networks mix things up and take chances. Lets wait out and see if Poker outlasts hockey on Primetime. Try it tonight, see how many Networks are airing hockey verses those airing a card game. Then, tomorrow you can logon and appologize, nitwit.

I didn't mean to say that canadian players were not the best in the world, i meant to say they would not be playing in canada like they are now if it was just a canadian league. The best go where the money is and Canada can't support that alone.

The story how ever boring was to prove how sports fans (all of them) spend their money. So don't think hockey fans are any different. It also refuted other peoples wrong beliefs with an actual situation.

But hey, check out ticket prices. Hey even check out league attendance by game. Hey, why don;t you even look at yourselves and see which games you tune into and don't, which games you will miss and wouldn't for a hurricane. Takes two tames to play a game and who you play determines your attention. If sid the kid is out of the line up do you care as much when your team plays pittsburgh?

But great come backs ot my facts. Lies, boring, who cares.

Glad to see you all running hockey teams and the NHL. Oh thats right you don't but the trend in hockey is to where the potential money is, family and away from fighting but I'm the idiot.

Just curious pete, why would a business run for profit drop one thing over another if it wasn't for more money?
wayne, 2008-04-16 12:56:14

Breat stats on the league revenue. I've seen those too.

So get rid of the US teams 51% gone and a lot of teams and potential revenue gone, Add hamilton and Winnipeg (hamilton ify and didn't winnepeg lose a team for financial reasons) and you might get league revenue back up to 60% of what it is now (struggling). 40% reduction ki;;s most companies then break it down by team. Funny most revenue is brought in by Leafs, then montreal. How many canadian teams are struggling to keep up this pay. Drop the pay and lose all the stars to the rising euro markets.
