Should fighting be banned from hockey? Sat, October 4, 2008
Should there be fighting in the NHL? As the hockey season approaches, this question, once again, is being asked.
Some say that hockey without fighting is like the Ice Capades. I don't know what they're talking about. I've taken my granddaughter to the Ice Capades, and the fairy ice princess throws a pretty good punch.
We all know the great Rodney Dangerfield line about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.
What's your opinion on fighting in hockey? Should it stay or should it go. Have your say in our forum.
Fighting in hockey is part of the sport. I don't want hockey-moms or dumb americans trying to water the sport down and give free reign to the Shawn Avery's of the world. A good solid right goes a long way to keeping the Samuelssons and Avery's in check.

Please stop with these riduculous stories about banning fighting from hockey.
It's such a lame arguement.
People who want it banned have never played it, and scream like idiots while holding their Carmel Macchiata watching their 9 year old daughters play soccer. ( That would be their male and femal daughters )

The rest of Canada doesn't care what Ontario thinks.

Yes. Fighting should be banned from NA hockey. You would get a lot more fans. The only major sport that allows fighting. I turn to another station when fighting erupts.

Most of the people who want to eliminate fighting from hockey don't watch hockey to begin with. I doubt they would start watching hockey even if the fighting was gone.

Fighting is a part of hockey just like any other sports and will occur so yeah let them fight.
However cheap shpt artistry such as waving your stick around like a spear or sword, hitting from behind . stepping on someone with your stake, body slamming somebody, spitting, racial slurs are not tolorated at all. Taht should be a very stiff fine and suspesion.
The reason why I say this cause there are players now adays whom seem to think they can get away with murder such as Avery, Ruutu etc.

If the NHL ever banned fighting the league would be full of Avery's, Ruuttu's etc, out running around at the stars with no fear of payback.
Also I believe that the hitting from behind, head shots and stick offences ( swinging and spearing ) would greatly increase.

The players wouldnt let fighting go out of hockey. Even Wayne Gretzky is all for fighting.
They in fact will try to get rid of the instigator rule in the summer so they can go back and police things themselves. Which is the way it should be, there werent as many head shots or hits from behind when there wasnt the instigator rule.
The league did get rid of the bench clearing brawls which was a good thing because that is when someone can get really get hurt.
Also fighting can be used by teams as a form of intimidation, the Big Bad Bruins and the Broad Street Bullies were the best at it back in the 70's and the Ducks did it last year to a certain extent.
