What were the Flames missing?
Wed, April 23, 2008

The good news in the Game 7 loss to the Sharks was the Flames showed enough character to take the series against a favoured team to the limit, especially when they trailed after five games.

The bad news is they were thrashed when it mattered most.

What happened to the Flames? What were they missing in their lineup to put them over the edge and wins a playoff series? Have your say in our forum.

Move to pull Kipper stinks

Calgary is totally outclassed by San Jose. If not for Kiprusoff, they wouldn't even be close.

If San Jose can get by Calgary, they are going to make some big noise.

The only way Calgary can stop San Jose is to take penalties.

I have to laugh and shake my head at the paranoid talk about the refereeing. The Flames clearly deserved every one of those penalties, except the hold on Iginla. The others weren't even borderline. The Flames have been an undisciplined team all season and it's coming home to roost. Quit the provincial whining.

I hear all this referee conspiracy talk and I dismiss it simply because the refereeing has been simply awful EVERYWHERE this year, not just against Canadian teams. The other reason being, well, I watched the game last night and the Flames deserved every penalty they got. Once the zebras make a few calls a certain way, you know how the game will be called. The refs were clearly calling everything so Calgary should have adjusted. Maybe now they will play hockey instead of wrestle. Stop making excuses for your team Flames fans, and demand instead that they play better. Although I admit, were it not for Nabokov the score may have been different.

Every hockey game I watched this year taht had a canadian team pitted against an american team, and being played in the states, the calls were one sided. Just as someone had pointed out about pronger. They are tring to push hockey onto the americans so they are going to make them win the cup and hopefully the yanks will start watching hockey and we can get back to fair officiating.

The Flames have grit, but both teams are big and they can't keep up with the Sharks' speed and skill over seven games. The penalties were deserved and a direct result of those shortcomings.

Red

It sure doesnt help when the refs are against you. Them 6 straight penalties against the Flames was frigging ridiculous.

Iggy didnt even hook that Shark, he pushed him.

This is what happens when the idiot running the league is american and wants american teams only to win the cup.

Look at last year, Pronger got a 1 game suspension against the Dead Things for a head shot, in the finals against the Sens he knocks McAmmond for a loop with a elbow and only gets another 1 game suspension when he is a repeat offender from the first round.

What a frigging joke, Pronger should have been gone for the rest of the finals plus 10 or 15 games to start this year.

All Canadian fans better start cheering for american teams cuz Bettman wont allow another Canadian team to win the cup again.

The Flames wanted a split in San Jose and they got it. If the zebras let the teams play, Calgary grit and physical play will make the difference over a long tough series. The Flames are Canada's best shot at the Cup.

Once again the Flames are intent on "snatching defeat from the hands of Victory!". If it was not for Kipper the series would already be over. The fact that big #3 loves to hit but will not take a hit to make a play is a brutal reminder of the defensive abilities of this team. Good offence, amazing goal-tending, and it ends there.
Red Deer Rebel fan, 2008-04-11 11:07:07

I think both teams are evenly matched both have great goaltending great offensive wheels and a heart to carry the cup but this is where we draw the line and the bettman circus begins. His agenda is marketing hockey in american cities and his corporate tactics involve american teams to win the stanley cup to achieve this. If you watched tonights game you know what I mean the refs might as well don shark uniforms. Still I will always cheer for the flames no matter what corporate greed tries to manipulate

This will be the best of all the first round series', with the possible exception of Minnesota/Colorado. Now that Calgary lost game 2 we will see what happens as Keenan is notoriously unable to cope with adversity but Iggy and Co. are made of sterner stuff, so we will see...
