Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr were the "gold standard" of hockey when I was young.
It's strange because my name is Gord (Gordie) and my brother's name is Rob (Bobby)!

Gordie is one of pro hockey's consumate athletes. At turning 80, most athletes in any sport would love to be in as good shape as Gordie. He was built for this great sport and his unassuming, humble manner complimented his natural talent, his passion and hard nosed play as he established himself as a great leader, and mentor. He commanded the respect of any person who had the oppotunity to play with him, or against him, be associated with him or just admire him throughout his career. His durability and longevity in a very physical sport, makes him an icon. His family must be very proud of him, as he too must be thankful for the support and health he has had with all the ups and downs that 80 years can bring. Gordie Howe is the personification of class and I personally wish him a very happy 80th birthday. In my eyes, he is an amazing person.
