Are the Leafs pulling off good moves?
Mon, November 24, 2008

The Maple Leafs have traded Carlo Colaicovo and Alex Steen to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Lee Stempniak.

Stempniak, 25, a native of West Seneca, N.Y., scored 27 goals two seasons ago.

This season, he has three goals and 10 assists through 14 games.

Is this a good move for the Leafs? Have your say in our forum.

I agree 100%. There is just no accountability anywhere in the Laffs organization. Why didn't Peddie get canned for hiring JFJ and over the cliff Fletch? Why are directors of scouting Penny and Morrison still around after making literally hundreds of bad player decisions?

It is absolutely idiotic to trade 2 high draft choices for Grabovsky. Do you think Gainey would let him go if he had any potential? Its not Grabovsky's fault when he is told by Laffs to perform as a first or second liner when he can only produce at the level of a 3rd or 4th stringer. But now the Laffs have a problem with an "underachieving" Grabovsky and they are minus two high draft choices. Ditto for the Finger move. Here is a guy who should be earnig $1M a year at most. Now at $3.5M/year he is expected by Peddie and Fletch and the scouts to perform as a 1st stringer. He won't because he can't. Draft choices for Mayers and Hollweg? Why?

Look at the Laffs roster. There are only 6 or 7 true NHLers (2nd and 3rd liners) who are not able to match up with the top 6 or 7 players om any other team. Same dumb mistakes repeated year after year with the same arrogance in management to tell everyone that this team has been rebuilt. Who would pay guys like Ponikarovsky, Devereuax, Williams and Boyce to produce one point every 4 or 5 games? Only the Laffs. Better still who would pay to watch these guys? Only the Laffs fans.
Laffs are finished before they start, 2008-08-12 10:05:44

Grabovski, Hollweg, Mayers, Devereau, Ponikarovsky, Williams, Bell, Antropov, Blake, Boyce, Moore, Tlusty, Stajan, and Steen. What firepower!!!!

Between these plugs, they may have the points to match someone in the top 100 in the league. But only if you add them all together.

How should the Leafs rebuild?

GET:

1. New ownership

2. A manager not suffering from senility

3. New scouting crew

4. Fickle fans that demand the cup

5. Failure to do all of the above will result in another 40+ years of medicrity.

I don't know about the other guys, but trading picks to get Luke Schenn was definitely WORTH IT!

He will be the foundation for the Maple Leafs' defence for years to come.

And most definitely not by making a sieve D your captain!
Gary O, 2008-08-07 12:11:24

Probably by not hiring Retired GM.
Ray, 2008-08-03 17:20:43

In July, Fletch gave up a 2009 5th round draft choice to get Hollweg, a 2008 3rd rounder to get Mayers, a 2008 5th rounder (128th overall) + a 2nd round 2010 to get Grabovski. To get Schenn with the Isles he traded 1st round picks + a 2009 2nd round pick.

Five draft choices gone to get the Laffs to where they are today. As well, the Finger acquisition ranks as one of the top 5 or 6 worst moves made by any club this year.

The worst part is that players who should be moved are still around. For example, Devereau, Ponikarovsky, Carlo, Williams, White will not do a thing for the Laffs this season who are well on their way to last place. But why trade away draft choices when the advantage of finishing last is to stock up on young players through the draft? Fletch's moves rival those of his predecessor for being bizarre.

Is JFJ back?, 2008-08-03 09:08:22

If Laffs knew what they were doing (LOL) Fletch would be filling the same role as Scotty in Chicago. Laffs desperately need a GM with a knowledge of how the salary cap has changed things. By trading away his draft choices, Fletch has demonstrated he is a product of yesterday's system when this would work. I give him full marks for firing Granato and hiring Coates and Joe N. but his rebuilding efforts are based on his experience which is a decade or so out of date. Laffs need a GM like Steve Tambellini who could be advised by Fletch on organizational matters but would have a more current understanding of the operating environment and players' capabilities. Obviously Laffs'a acquisitions under Fletch were based mostly on advice he received from others such as Penny, Granato and the brilliant Morrision. I mean who would you rather have on your team Finger at $3.5M/yr or Antoine Vermette at $2.75? Go ahead Fletch, phone Murray and offer him Finger for Vermette straight up. Murray would either die from laughing or choking to get his breath.

Its the same old problem in Laffland, no one can assess hockey talent, especially young talent which is the future of a hockey club.

I mean Finger, Gorbovsky and Hollweg are going to turn this thing around. OK Fletch you've done your thing, now head for Florida.

So, Scotty Bowman is joining the Chicago Black Hawks front office. That should speak volumes to those idiots in the Leafs management. They kept their draft choices after enduring years at or near the bottom. That's the way you do it, not by giving up choices for meatheads like Hollweg.
Gary O., 2008-07-31 16:01:01

With some of the moves "Over the Cliff" is making he reminds me why they got rid of him the first time when he made the same dumb trading away drafts.Just read Scotty Bowman joined the Black Hawks when the Leafs couldn't convince him there was a bright future with them.Pretty smart guy that Scotty is!
