Are the Leafs pulling off good moves?
Mon, November 24, 2008

The Maple Leafs have traded Carlo Colaicovo and Alex Steen to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Lee Stempniak.

Stempniak, 25, a native of West Seneca, N.Y., scored 27 goals two seasons ago.

This season, he has three goals and 10 assists through 14 games.

Is this a good move for the Leafs? Have your say in our forum.

I don't know why the Leaf fans are so upset, Cliff is in the building, JF has left the building, things will turn around, it's started already with a decent second half record, good kids in the system,the Sundin era has ended, Maurice although a good coach is done,you the Leaf fans will see a very good product next year. everything has come to a head,finally........

The biggest problem with the Leafs is the fans who attend the ACC (All Corpse Center) they don't know the differnce between a puck or a piece of sushi. The biggest game of the year on Tuesday there was absolutely no fan support to start the game how pathetic. Start selling the tickets to the real Leafs Nation not the corporate Leafs Nation.

george, what's wrong with sundin staying with the leafs? he has 78 points so far. that's not bad for $5 million, right?

Doesn't matter what happens, fools in Toronto will continue to support them and pad the pockets of the Teacher's Pension Fund

I seriously am a huge leaf fan, and I knew they wouldn't make the playoffs this year. I will be surprized if they make the playoffs next year. What needs to be done? It is so horrible where do you start? An empty arena would send a message, because no one in the organization seems to care about winning when every game is sold out and they dont make the playoffs 3 (maybe to be 4 or 5 ) years in a row. And if making the playoffs becomes how we rate a season as successful, then our aim is way to low. For next year, if you are truely a leaf fan, resist the urge to buy any tickets to games, if all leaf fans unite together and no one shows up, maybe the higher up's will get the message. Or, we can keep being sheep and buying over priced tickets to sell out for under producing teams... LEAF FANS SHOULD STRIKE!!! If you go to a game next season, then you are not a leaf fan deep down, you are a poser.

I'm a Leaf fan but I say .. GOOD! The team has been crap for far too many years so maybe this is the kick in the butt that the idiots at the top need to re-vamp this team, get some CONSISTENT talent on the team, not players that go ... Oh.. look, playoffs are coming, maybe we should make it look like we care.... and so they score some goals and get semi-close only to disappoint fans yet again.

Dump Tucker... Blake.. McCabe, Kubina, Raycroft, and even Antropov and maybe Sundin should retire. Build up the younger kids that have played well, get some high-priced youngish talent, and then maybe, just maybe, and I know it's wishfull thinking, but just M-A-Y-B-E, in a couple of years, we'll see a Leaf team that can not only make the playoffs, but can make it to the final and a serious run for the cup, and not the one in the centre of the green for a change!

A bunch of overpaid and under achieve athletes + a bunch owners who does not care about winning - what do you expect
John, 2008-03-28 08:07:42

There are a lot of "ifs" associated with the Leafs fortunes in the coming years.

IF Mats Sundin decides to retire they have close to $5 million to spend on a UFA (or two, depending upon the type of player they go after);

IF Sundin comes back they have a 38 y/o chewing up something close to that amount (how much of a cut would he take?);

IF they can deal McCabe ($14,40,000 left on his contract over 3 years by which time he'll be 36), Blake (#15 million over 4 years by which time he'll be 38), and Tucker ($9 million over 3 years by which time he'll be 36) it would certainly make life a lot easier for the new GM - but good luck in trying to find a team willing to take those cap hits for seriously-flawed players who may not even be willing to waive their no-trade clauses (except Blake who doesn't have one - but he's untradable);

IF they can peddle Kubina, who has 2 years left at $10 million and will only be 33 when his contract expires - which they will likely do if they can find a taker since there is a small window open this summer to deal him since his no trade clause was d ependant upon them making the playoffs;

IF they can get rid of Bell and Raycroft this summer - which shouldn't be too difficult since they only have 1 year each at around #2,200,000 each.

IF they can finish a bit lower they might get a Top 6 pick. Right now they're 23rd with the only teams having much chance to pass them being Phoenix and Columbus. That would give them 25th and a 6th pick. Of course, both Phoenix and Columbus see the same scenario.

And IF your uncle had different equipment he'd be your aunt.

well, it was a long shot anyway. but the last two month was good, and only if they could start next year on the same note, the result would be much different.

Sell the franchise to someone who actually cares about hockey.
