Are the Leafs pulling off good moves?
Mon, November 24, 2008

The Maple Leafs have traded Carlo Colaicovo and Alex Steen to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Lee Stempniak.

Stempniak, 25, a native of West Seneca, N.Y., scored 27 goals two seasons ago.

This season, he has three goals and 10 assists through 14 games.

Is this a good move for the Leafs? Have your say in our forum.

Just remember all the fanfare and headlines for every previous GM the Leafs hired. They were all supposed to be the answer to what ailed them at the time.Whoever they hire can only improve the team because they have hit rock bottom again. The Leafs are like a punch drunk fighter who keeps getting knocked to the canvas any evertime he tries to get up,he gets knocked down again.Burke says no one from the Leafs has contacted him or the Ducks to ask to talk to him yet so maybe they have someone else in mind ?I'm cautiously optimistic Burke will be the man,and if the brass give him a big enough stick he'll turn the team around by bringing in some hard nosed Canadian players like maybe Chris Neal if he can steal him from the Sens.

Heres hopeing !

I may be that Burke's arrogance may not be appreciated by his fellow GM's. It's hard to make a trade when no one will trade with you.

I have to agree with you Ed. The second this is announced (IF it is), it'll be like the Second Coming insofar as the TO media is concerned.

However, I will wait and see how they expect this guy to be able to find takers for the likes of McCabe, Blake, Tucker, Kubina when no one else could accomplish that. Or do they believe that, because Burke is on the scene, somehow these guys will turn their careers around?

With or without Burke, they are a good 2 to 3 years aways from even remotely becoming a contender for a title, never mind make the Top 8!

I suppose the re-building has to start somewhere, but I don't see anything in his career that suggests he is capable of building a consistent winner.

Vancouver never won anything, and although the Ducks did win a Cup, he inherited that team pretty much from someone else, and one year later his brilliant moves got them bounced in the 2st round.

Brian Burke is the biggest blowhard to ever become a GM in the NHL. He will be nothing short of another circus act in TO. He was In Hartford and Vancouver with zilch results and was unceremoniously fired. He did not build the Anaheim Stanley Cup team. Bryan Murray did.

If he gets hired by the Leafs, it will not be too long before they will want to turf him out.

I think there is only one thing we can count on for the Leafs to do. Pick the wrong guy. Only pro team that needs a search committee lol. This isnt looking for a CEO or COO to run a chain of businesses its a gm of a frigging hockey team.

I am shocked this is such a big story, I would be embarrassed if I was an employee of the Leafs organization to come out and say they have formed a search committee.

Knowing how the Leafs run there organization all 3 will probably want someone different than the other 2 and meddling Peddie will be the tie breaker lol.

Burke is over rated. Bryan Murray drafted Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. Burke did trade for Pronger and signed Neidermayer when he was a free agent.

Kenny Holland is a better GM I believe, he has put a very good scouting department together in Detroit that has found quite a few late round draft picks that have been solid players in Detroit.

Even Jim Nil ( Hollands right hand man for many years ) would be just as good as Burke. There are more considerations than just Burke as the be all and end all GM of the Leafs.
Gary, 2008-04-22 18:55:28

Why do the Leafs think Burke is the big saviour, sounds like they are making the same mistakes over and over again, throw a lot of money at the situation and everything will be solved, if these people were in the real business world of trying to make a buck they would have gone bankrupt a long time ago, they make money in spite of themselves.....
Ed, 2008-04-22 18:40:42

Golf, golf and more golf lol. They must be getting good at golf since they havent made the playoffs in 3 years and wont for the next several at least.

I have to wonder just how successful this search committee will be in finding a new GM. Why Gordon Kirke is 1 of the 3 is beyond me, he is a player agent. How that qualifies him to help pick the next GM is puzzling to me.

I guess Peddie the meddler picked this 3 panel group to hire the new GM so in a round a bout way Peddie was still involved.

Go figure lol

Burke has had an extension offer for some time and hasn't signed it, I suspect because he's terrified at the prospect of life without Selanne and Niedermeyer, as Anaheim was circling the drain earlier this season without them, and Pronger displayed just how overrated he is.

Burke doesnt get along with a lot of people, its just his nature. It doesnt change the fact that he is a very viable GM for many teams, including Vancouver. Sometimes hatchets can be buried in the name of success.
