Are the Leafs pulling off good moves?
Mon, November 24, 2008

The Maple Leafs have traded Carlo Colaicovo and Alex Steen to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Lee Stempniak.

Stempniak, 25, a native of West Seneca, N.Y., scored 27 goals two seasons ago.

This season, he has three goals and 10 assists through 14 games.

Is this a good move for the Leafs? Have your say in our forum.

I don't get all the grief you guys give McCabe-he fights, hits, and scores, has a 100 mph shot is a carreer + player, had 17 goal seasons, allstar and Norris considerations. Ed Jovanovski is making 7 mil, and is a career - player nobody dumps on him! I say trade Kaberle for a first line center and keep McCabe and Kubina blasting away from the point, also keep Bell we need his toughness, bring up Pogge and say thank-you good-bye to Sundin.

Good the Leafs got rid of Gawky Gill. HE sure secrewed things up for the Pens. Now dump Roberts, Malone and Sundin. They are over the hill.

I like Ron's idea of throwing the buy out costs into the lap of JFJ. After all, he was the architect of the mess Cliff has to deal with...and that is a considerable job.

I must applaud Fletcher's efforts thus far. Every player he has moved was a good choice in my eyes. McCabe will be a pain in the rump to move, but he is going regardless. I also like the way he is handling Sundin, who seems to take his sweet time making up his mind at the peril of not being able for the team to go forward. One more note. As this is a forum for comments on rebuilding the Leafs I am sooo tired of reading assinine comments from non-Leaf fans who say derrogatory things or that they just don't care. Solution; don't post!!!

Well, so much for my theory. After reading Simmons' column today it looks as if McCabe doesn't have a future in Toronto either. That's fortunate for Leaf fans, not so fortunate for the rest of us (yes, I'm a Habs fan).

Fletcher is clearly taking care of business. He'll try to move McCabe, but he knows he'll have to take the equivalent in salary back his way. Easier said than done.

It's too bad, but I think a lot of Bud fans want to see Kubina hit the road as well. The thing is, the guy was playing excellent hockey near the end of the season, but from what I read it won't be good enough for Fletcher.

However, if I'm Fletcher and Kubina is not welcome back, why not focus on Jason Smith? This is a guy I'd love to have in Montreal; however today Gainey stated he wasn't touching his top-six defencemen. Smith is a former captain and playoff warrior. And while he's at it, he might want to make a pitch for Mark Streit who doesn't seem to be in Montreal's future plans.

There's a few options for Fletcher the Facilitator right now. He'd increase those options if he could move McCabe and maybe Kubina.

Get the goaltending and the defence corps established and THEN go after the goals. Defence wins championships and offence wins fans.

Be interesting to see how this pans out.

Nice to see the Leafs clearing out some deadwood. I think Kubina along with a few others need to feel their pulse.Half efforts are not good enough. A few "good" Canadian boys on the team wouldn't hurt either. This year I predict the Leafs might make the playoffs, but only if they get a serious replacement for Sundin, and at least one Quality defenceman. Oh by the way, Toskala is a number 2 goalie. Will not advance in playoffs unless someone appears as a bonified NHL goal tender. I am Canadian and I want to see the Leafs prosper. They are not my favourite team , yet!!!

Ray.

Incredible how the only thing many non Leaf fans do is just criticize the team, absolutely nothing consructive to say. Your jealousy is so obvious that such a mediocre team is so popular. That's because Toronto is the center of the hockey world. Now live with it.

Pete, if you dont care why are you posting ?

Atta boy Cliffhanger. Keep going with the cleanup. Some advice - send the buyout bills to the thin-lipped JFJ and/or Peddie. Every single move JFJ made has to be undone. And when the puck drops come Sept, keep the players who are trying and cut those who are just along for the ride to collect their million dollar paychecks. Hopefully some behind the scenes changes also are taking place with the scouting staff.

Who cares!!

I agree with Jay Z's last comment!

Go Habs

Isn't it obvious what the old guy is doing? Create a lot of cap space and hope that he can convince Campbell to sign in TO - not likely. Moving McCabe out is key to that. Primarily because of $$$ but also because TO wouldn't need another offensively oriented D-man (already have Kaberle and for the PP, White and Kubina). Then, with Campbell in the fold, ride out a crap year and end up with the #1 pick. Take Tavares. Problem with the plan - TO will fail to get Campbell, will not finish last and even if they did, would lose the lottery to the team with a .05% chance of winning - with their luck Ottawa.
