Should Toronto have been awarded the 2008 Olympics?
Thu, August 7, 2008

As the Olympic torch ascends tomorrow to light the Beijing sky, let it be remembered that this might've been Toronto's games.

Just imagine, as the Olympic flame lights up Beijing, how vastly different it would've made Toronto's waterfront if it lit up our new Olympic Stadium near the foot of the Don River. Of course, it would've meant asking a couple guys living under a cardboard box to move...

the olympics are not as bad as some of u make them out to be. Yes cities lose money hosting them, but what big event doesnt cost money? If we call our city one of the best in the world, we must at least try to host it. btw mike, most athletes do not make millions unless they are pros (nfl, nba, nhl). most local athletes have no sponsors and work full time jobs, pay taxes like u and me and then make extra time to train for the olympics.

The olympics itself is a joke ,doped up athletes in virtually all sports; if you can call, even half the events a sport. Yeah lets reward somebody for losing with a medal. It has become a total waste of money for countries to support, so somebody who can do flips gets millions of dollars to have their face posted on a cereal box. How about giving back the money you cost us taxpayers over so many years ,so you didnt have to work like the rest of us

Good Lord the City cant even run itself with the inept government it has now.

It would end up just like Montreal paying it off generations later.

Toronto is in a never-ending quest for the Olympics it seems.

Sorry, but the Winter Olympics is nowhere near as important or as big as the Olympics.

can't say TO would have been a good choice, China will get real messy real quick. It's allready started and should prove to be intresting, scary but intresting.

Oh Please! What are some of you smoking? I live in Toronto, and I love my city, but I'd be the first to admit we would have been HORRIBLE Olympic hosts.

Our city constantly teeters on financial deficit despite tax subsidies from the province, our pollution and infrastructure are not anything to be proud about, our motorists angrily honk and drive through police stops during local parades and marathons; and our Olympic team, thanks mostly to the underfunding and ridiculous qualifying standards set by the COA, would have been hard pressed to win even a handful of medals. We would have embarrassed ourselves as bad as Atlanta.

Beijing: Strong Olympic team expected to win many medals, lots of financial support from government and local media, unselfish and willing volunteers, more readily available facilities, etc.

So how exactly does Toronto qualify as better hosts? Oh yes! I forgot --- human rights (sarcasm on: no, we NEVER detained anyone of a specific religious and cultural background without any charges, sarcasm off). Yes, China has its dirty laundry, and how convenient that hosting the Olympic games is an invitation to air your dirty laundry in front of the whole world, isn't it?

All this while going broke hosting it (any one from Montreal want to enlighten us on how long it took to pay off the Olympic Stadium)?

Beijing, you wanted it, you got it. Better you than us. I hope Toronto never gets the Summer games until it is financially viable and worthwhile --- for now, best be polite visitors and not inept hosts.

And Rick, don't toot your horn about Vancouver yet -- and hosting the Winter games is much easier and cheaper than the Summer games

it should not have gone to china, that's for sure. it's a farce. how could they give it to them is beyond me. i don't know if TO would heve been a perfect choice but WAY better the china!

Toronto missed out because the city is a joke and your mayor was a rascist insulting Africans. You didn't get the Olympics in '96 because there were better cities and you didn't get '08 because Beijing was clearly better.

Go Vancouver 2010. An Olympic games Canada will be proud of.

China shouldn't have even made the short list considering how they treat their own people-think about harvesting the organs of the Falun Gong and the recycling of their organs to the highest bidder. This started in 2001-the same year Beijing got the Olympics. Imagine that! So much for 'harmonious society. Why not kill all the undesirables before the Games is the communist slogan. What a tragedy. We have the IOC to thank for that one.

The vote was very clear. Toronto lost. Not by a small margin, but decisively. Get over it. The world is in love with China's economy and investing money there. Those who believe that Toronto should have won also believe that the leafs could win the cup this year.
