Should the Canadiens honour Roy?
Thu, March 27, 2008

Following the now infamous hockey brawl involving his son, Jonathan Roy, should the Montreal Canadiens honour Patrick Roy?

what is being overlooked is that in 95% of the hockey fights, both combatants are willing participants.

Nadeau was abiding by the rules and remaining in his crease. Roy was told to stay in his and refused, plus his father directed him.

Even purists agree that if a goalie is getting involved down-ice the other goalie will join in. Once again this wasnt the case.

Roy picked a fight with an unwilling combatant and then hit him when he got him down. Even that goes against your "code".

Peter, dont make a comparison between UFC and hockey, that makes you look foolish. UFC's objective is to beat your opponent into submission. Hockey's objective is to score more goals on your opponent than they score upon you.

Roger, you have summed it up accurately. One cannot go up to anyone who is not posing a threat and assault them.

P.Roy was an embarassment as a player and nothing has changed as a coach.

There's the guy in my office that's so much better than me at my job, I wonder if I can go over to his desk and punch his lights out and then tell the police when they come to arrest me that it's all part of work.

I doubt they'll buy that excuse.

Wow Roy, while I'll agree that nowhere in the criminal code does it say that the laws of the land are suspended on a hockey rink, or during any sporting event, this is just a given.

I guess I should've sued the guy who checked me into the boards when I dislocated my shoulder years ago.

And what about all those fools injured while being assaulted in that ultimate fighting crap which is so popular?

Sound foolish? Of course it is. If it's a part of the game or sporting event the 'law of the land' has no place in entering the rink, ring or cage.

I'd also assume that half the comments here are from clueless people who have never played an intense, competitive sport.

The penalties should be more severe, but then you have people like Kelly Hrudey saying that it was "blown out of proportion" since J. Roy is Patrick's son. That is irresponsible "reporting" on behalf of the CBC, but then again this is the same guy who railed against the requirement for players to shake hands after a playoff game.

Great example, eh? Time for Hrudey to get a new job.

You want to punish that team...make them play Jonathan Roy instead. Lets face it, hi is a terrible goalie who would never be on a team in that league unless daddy was the coach. Patrick Roy should be banned for life, he is a complete embarrassment to the league

The suspension & fines are OK.

It's rather ironic though that Patrick Roy was lauded as the next best thing since sliced bread when he bought the team. Even more, he was told by french media that he was the best coach they had seen in a long while and know he's the scum of hockey.

I believe that although a review needs to be done, many people became judge & jury by saying that he "enticed" his son to go beat up the other goalie!?!?! I know Patrick is very passionate about hockey but to say this without even asking him first???!?!!

By the way, for all the other "purists" who say fighting should be banned, yes I agree but before we go out & peg the blame on one guy because he's a role model & "should know better", we need to look at ourselves first & in this case, other situations that frankly, weren't even discussed about, (the other fight that day???) and stop putting the blame on ONE person for a situation in hockey that has been existant for god knows how long and accepted (even if its wrong)...

Peter D, and all the others who think that what Jonathan Roy did wasn't a crime, WAKE UP!!! Nowhere in the criminal code does it say that the laws of the land are suspended on a hockey rink, or during any sporting event. The idiot skated the length of the ice to attack another person who was not threatening him, or taunting him in any way. His only "offence" was playing for the other team. There's absolutely no excuse ofr it, and it most definitely is a CRIME. The wonder is not that police are investigating, it is that they didn't act on it at the scene, and that so many other neanderthals have got away with garbage like that for so many years. I don't believe throwing the kid out of the game for life is the answer, but he should be put on "probation." Screw up again, and your gone for life. Pronger, Simon, and a handful of other hockey goons need to be given the same ultimatum. Thewse guys are paid a hell of a lot of money because they are highly visible role models. They absolutely must be held to a higher standard.
Roy, 2008-03-26 13:55:51

No it was not....he should be suspended for life....so he can't set an "example" again..what a shameful act he encouraged and supported...he should be man enough to suspend himself
Ray, 2008-03-26 13:52:07

Minimum 2 years suspension.

NO it was not enough!
lodunsford, 2008-03-26 13:36:21

Encouraging your kid to beat up another kid that obviuously doesn't want to fight shows the worst in parenting as well as coaching.

7 games is a joke. Give him 30 and send a message.
