Who will be awarded the Hart Trophy ? Sun, March 23, 2008
The very notion that the Washington Capitals must make the playoffs for Alexander Ovechkin to win the Hart Trophy is ludicrous. He has been the best player in hockey this season. He has been the most impactful player.
If the Caps miss out by a point or two, how does that lessen what Ovechkin has accomplished?
The Leafs haven't been eliminated yet but the playoffs look unlikely. The fact that they're not way out of the race at this point can be attributed to only one player - Vesa. At least Ferguson did one thing right.
If the Hart winner can play for a team that doesn't make the playoffs, I'd go with Toskala.

He is a great player but nothing like Jarome Iginla. Iggy is the most deserving Hart candidate.

You might suggest it isn't significant but it apparently is to some voters.
This is exactly what kept Iginla from winning the Hart the year that Theodore won it for helping Montreal squeak into the playoffs.
Although an individual may be successful on a team do they make the team as a whole better? Good enough to be better than half the teams in their conference? Although I love what Ovechkin has done this year I agree that the deciding factor as to whether he gets the Hart should hinge on whether he can push Washington into the playoffs. They're getting close. Let's hope they get in and this debate will be moot.
