Who will be awarded the Hart Trophy ?
Sun, March 23, 2008

The very notion that the Washington Capitals must make the playoffs for Alexander Ovechkin to win the Hart Trophy is ludicrous. He has been the best player in hockey this season. He has been the most impactful player.

If the Caps miss out by a point or two, how does that lessen what Ovechkin has accomplished?

Ovechkin still Hart worthy.

We gotta be consistent here...

Over the past few years, there have been players that have lit the lamp excessively and still missed the playoffs and have not been considered for the Hart.

Vinny L. isnt going to be considered this year because of his team's performance.

Where is Luongo..? He single-handedly has gotten a horrible Vancouver team this far. He by far has been MVP in the games won category. The 'nucks would be bottom feeders if not for Louie'

How many times has his (AO)offensive prowess and slant cost his team the game.

I'm with Deap, because the Caps would be bottom feeding with Tampa Bay without him. Just as an option though, what about Malkin? His play after Crosby went down has been nothing short of spectacular. just a thought....

My two cents: Ovechkin. To my thinking, it's not just what he's done, but how he's done it and that he's done it with the supporting cast in DC, such as it is. Arguably the most exciting player in the league, nobody else carries his team like the Great 8. Where would DC be without him? Playoffs or not, Ovie gets my vote for Hart.

Gotta love a man with a good sense of humor.May I add few names to your "valuable" list,Ricky?.McCabe,Tucker and Blake could also be named as "valuable" to such an elite organisation.

Tough question. So many Leafs to chose from. Sundin? The guy is a true leader and the greatest ever. Toskala? One of the all time best in goal and almost singlehandedly responsible for getting the Leafs to the playoffs. Could we see the Hart and Vezina going to the same person? Antropov? He started out the season number one but has just been a top 5 performer since then. With Sundin and Antropov out the past few games, maybe Steen or Stajan would be a candidate for helping to keep the Stanley Cup run alive. Kubina has turned into the league's top defencemen but he had a slow start (still better than 99% of the rest of the league but not quite up to MVP level). It would be a tough choice.

What constitutes the MVP award...

the most valuable to the league or the most valuable to the team...

The arguement below claims when Theodore won the MVP we won it because he got them into the playoffs. That was the continual arguement that was presented.

This year Iginla will be right at the top in scoring and the flames will make the playoffs. If the same logic is applied then there should be no question of his winning that award.

Unless once again the writers that live in the secluded east ignore that fact that the only real hockey is played in the West.

I'd take Getzlaf and Bieska and Phanuef over Malkin, Crosby and Ovechkin any day of the week.

Iggy??

Come on. He is an excellent player, but certainly not a superstar. He had one 50 goal season in 10 seasons, and never got above 100 pts in any season, but close though. He is averaging 66 pts a season. Ovechkin 99 pts. I know the argument is that he is new but you can't argue the stats. Ovechkin is a pure goal scorer. Gretzky even predicts Ovechkin is the only one that may score 90 in a season like he did. Ooops, I said Gretzky, and Calgary fans don't really consider him the greatest

I've seen a lot of hockey this year. I've seen Crosby, Malkin & The Pens, followed my team The Habs,

The Caps, and the other East Teams. My west exposure has been more limited.

Ovechkin comes as advertized - Alexander the Great. A super sniper and plays with attitude. He's not just another Russian ice dancer that wilts when the going gets tough. Anyone who's watched him play knows he gives as good as he gets. He's leading the league in goals and total points and on many nights has carried the team on his back. MVP to me...

If Ollie the goalie wasn't such a sieve this season, the Caps would be in the top eight now and this debate would be moot.

Ovechkin has to get it, he scored 60 goals, thats amazing these days, he has fun playing the game and leads the leauge in goals and points. Anyone who say's Iggy should get is good for an argument but Ovechkin has done more this season.

Valuable does not mean best.

What does Iggy mean to Calgary...

Louie' to Vancouver...

Would anyone doubt Getzlaf's value to Anaheim ?

Sorry... Ovechkin is a superstar, but he's not an MVP.

According to Webster..

2. having qualities worthy of respect, admiration, or esteem: a valuable friend.

3. of considerable use, service, or importance: valuable information.

Ovechkin did not get the Caps' into the playoffs by himself... maybe they may have done better without him on their team... we wont know, but in the games I have seen him play, I don't see him matching the overall value as Bieska or Phanuef...

Western Conference ! ALL THE WAY !
