Should the NHL have no-touch icing?
Thu, March 20, 2008

Minnesota defenceman Kurtis Foster's broken left leg is the latest gruesome reminder of the dangers of touch-up icing in the NHL.

Foster will miss the rest of the season, including the playoffs, after crashing hard into the boards March 19th, during a race to the puck with San Jose rookie Torrey Mitchell.

Foster had surgery Thursday to repair a displaced fracture in his femur, and a stabilizing rod was put into his leg. Full story

Should the NHL do like almost all other hockey leagues and introduce no-touch icing?

jimf-> This is not about making hockey soft. There are plenty of opportunities to check. I find that hockey is getting a bit ridiculous though; everytime a guy is near the boards, he gets plastered. It used to not be this way. Plays are getting scrambly and the refs let play go on for 30 seconds while the puck's in the feet of the players going nowhere. It really ruins the game and slows it down.

To see a guy checked into the boards on an icing play is not necessary - it's dangerous. Just blow the whistle or outlaw checks on icing plays.

There are different boards out there. Sounds funny but the newer ones give alot more. Some people on here would make them out to sound like they are made of stone. I was at an Edmonton Rush (Lacrosse) game last weekend and they made the boards move alot. Its hard to tell but I would guess about 6 inches of total travel. These are smaller guys moving slower. I have seen some older boards not really give much at all, and all I'm saying is that there is boards that give more than others in the NHL. I think the saddle dome (Calgary) is softer yet that rexal (edmonton). I've been in both this last year.

Personally...get rid of the dumb icing rule all together and let these guys play. The rule is a big waste of time and ya, it can be very dangerous.

Johnny, while I agree with you, I must point out that the boards are not wooden, haven't been for almost 25 years.

Leave the rules!!!

we've made hockey soft enough, maybe they should be playing with rubber pucks...

As a fan I cringe when I see two players racing full speed toward a solid wood wall to be the first to touch the puck.I've never seen it in the HHL skills competition, but it would fit right in to American Gladiators competition.Bettman and company should get their heads out of the sand or wherever they have them stuck and "Ban touch icing" !!

carey -> NHL players are like anyone. Some have common sense and some don't. Personally, I wouldn't leave it up to the players to decide.

It's the one rule they should have changed. Leave the other rules alone, the touch up does nothing for the game. Even Don Cherry the biggest proponent of hitting the games has wants rid of it. Has for years.
Pete, 2008-03-29 08:45:26

Stop changing rules!! Players do have their own common sense!
carey, 2008-03-28 02:07:33

All these injuries for an almost meaningless play. It doesn't slow the game down to have no-touch icing, it just slows the icing play down at the time.

I don't find it exciting to see two men skating at breakneck (literally) speed to touch the puck on an icing play.

Until someone is killed, the NHL will go on the same way, ignoring the danger of this.
