Should Ottawa get another CFL franchise?
Thu, March 20, 2008

Improvements to a broken-down building and an agreement the would-be tenants can live with appear to be all that's standing in the way of Ottawa fielding another CFL team in the 2010 season.

A local power group fronted by 67's owner Jeff Hunt that is backed by wealthy developers John Ruddy, William Shenkman and Roger Greenberg is expected to be granted a conditional franchise for the nation's capital next week.

Is Hunt's group the best way to return the CFL to Ottawa? Should the capital region get another football team following the loss of the Renegades and Rough Riders? Have your say in our forum.

Go CFL, The NFL sucks. Why do some Canadians feel that everything from the USA is great and if its Canadaian it must suck. Not that long ago in this country Football was up there with hockey, we can do that again. The CFL is a better game then the NFL with a different style of athlete . Some of the CFL players have more talent in there little finger then their NFL counterpart, but there not 6'3 and 280 lbs there only 5'11 and 230 who have set all sorts of NCAA records. Most countrys have their own sports leagues, IE Japan baseball, English soccer ETC and they embrace

their sports. we should do the same, like they do in Western Canada, which by the way is the real Canada

no - ottawa should get an NFL franchise!

entire CFL should be taken over by NFL so we watch real football - not some minor league dressed up to be a 'Canadian' game

Yes I think the third time will be the charm. These owners are very succesful business men and what is more important is that they are local.

The Gliebermens and Wang were clueless about Canadian Football.

Someone made a good point about how the last time Ottawa was getting other teams leftovers. They need to give Ottawa better players to select than 3rd stringers / special team players.

I could see Halifax possibly getting a CFL team, but not places like Moncton or Saint John or St. John's.

Another Sports team that wont make it here, wake up.

Oh no wait a minute ,lets use my tax dollars to bring it back for a third time.

Ottawa deserves another try, for sure. Fans were not at fault for the depatures before. Jeff Hunt know what he is doing, if this group cannot make it work, than it deserves to die.

Montreal has had three teams (with sucess the third time)...why all the problem with Ottawa having the same "chance"...afraid it might work here like in Montreal?

One other observation about the demise of the Renegades. First they charge Ottawa an arm and a leg "expansion" fee - and then expose only stiffs in the draft, especially the so-called Canadian "talent" group - and then sit back and watch them flounder on the field for several seasons! What the hell did they expect - full-houses in enduring gratitude? Give me a freaking break. And it will be no different this time around either. Imagine, then, how weak any other "expansion" teams will be.

Fans in any city (other than Leaf fans) would be hard pressed to put up with inept ownership and poorly performing teams over most of a 25 year span. At the heart of things, I suspect that if Ottawa had a well run, professional organization that has a competitive product and a refurbished stadium (Frank Clair is a dump - I guess the South Side really does suck after all) where the scoreboard actually works, fans will come out. That being said, this should be absolutely the very last time the football experiment is tried.

I think it's unfair to blame the fans in Ottawa for three decades of poor ownership and horrendous management. Don't forget the Riders were fairly well supported during the sixties and seventies, and really through a good part of the eighties as well (despite 20 successive losing seasons). I agree this should be the last attempt if it doesn't work, but at least give the fans a chance to respond with decent and committed ownership (which the franchise hasn't had in the last 25 years). Over the next decade or two, the CFL needs to expand to 10-12 teams. I have concerns about the league's ability to do this with the annual operating cost of franchises in the $12-15M range (it rules too many potential sites out). However, the league just can't get there without reestablishing a franchise in the nation's capital first.

This is a positive step, in my view. The league has identified a sound ownership group by the look of it, and that will give this team a chance to prosper (unlike the last group, who appeared unable or unwilling to fund to the level needed). As for those who say Ottawa "has had it's chance and the league should look elsewhere", show me a building even on the drawing boards that can house a team and I'll listen... the fact is, there is no other city with a facility close to suitable for a CFL team. If you want a franchise in Moncton, Quebec City, or Halifax, start lobbying for a building. Absent that, the CFL is never coming your way.
