Should non-playoff bound NHL teams tank their season?
Thu, March 13, 2008

There is a better opportunity for the Leafs and Oilers to get a draft lottery pick than there is for them to somehow qualify fo the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Sitting on the outside looking in, with teams above them still to pass to even have a glimmer of hope at clinching a playoff spot, Canada's two teams not already in the top eight might be better off tanking the end of their seasons.

This begs the question: Should NHL teams in the bottom half of their conference try to lose their final games to ensure a better draft position this summer? What would be the repercussions from the fans, management or NHL on this matter? Have your say in our forum.

Call someone from out west to do the job, eh jimf? the only western canadian guys of note on the leafs are tucker (born in Alberta) and williams (saskatchewan). your oilers, on the other hand, would be an ECHL team without the players from toronto and area. the oilers should be renamed the Edmonton Ontarians with all the good players they stole from here. And dont even start about the oil --- once that oil dries up and everyone is driving battery powered cars, youll come out east begging us for a job

Pride and losing forever doesn't make much sense. Dump some players at the trade deadline and crash the team.

In a few years the team has a chance of doing something legitimate.

Terry Laliberte.... what language are you speaking?
Popsicle Pete, 2008-03-19 18:42:21

Gord, Anaheim may own Edmontons #1 pick but that pick is getting more irrelevant every game they play. Speaking of which, why isn't there a thread on here about whether the Oilers will make it in or not? I've known for months the Leafs wouldn't make it, but yet that thread still exists. Why? I'll give credit where it's due: Leafs Nation ALWAYS talks about their team...even when they suck, which they do. GO OILERS GO!

I agree with Norbit, don't ever mention the oilers and leafs in the same sentence unless your comparing how totally opposite they are, the oilers are part of oil country where hard work and persiverence is an everyday ritual, theleafs belong to the leaf nation where if you want anything done properly call someone from out west to do it, the leafs suck ...so does leaf nation!!!!

Actually, Edmonton has NO chance to get a lottery pick this summer. Anaheim has it.

This one topic I want to be very clear on. No-coach-owner-player-team ,no how far past what got them their dumps the season. If so, refund my paying ticket.
Terry Laliberte, 2008-03-17 16:25:19

Don't mention the Oilers at the top of this article, they have a far better shot at making it in than the Leafs do.
Norbit, 2008-03-17 14:48:41

It's unethical to intentionally lose, but if you make a few tweaks to your lineup you can set yourself up to have a better chance to lose and get a better pick.

I don't think fans would appreciate it if you are not eliminated yet from the playoff contention.

But, when you are officially eliminated, put in young players and Raycroft. No sense trying hard to win for nothing at that point.
