Will the 2003 NHL draft prove to be one of the best ever?
Tue, March 11, 2008

Eric Staal, Ryan Getzlaf, Dion Phaneuf, Thomas Vanek, Shea Weber, Milan Michalek, Mike Richards, Corey Perry, Brent Burns, Zach Parise - and that's just the tip of the iceberg with this group.

Are Staal, Phaneuf, Getzlaf and the rest of 2003 the greatest draft class since '79?

A list of players drafted into the NHL in 2003

The Maple Leafs have traded away first and second round picks numerous times over the past ten years.

If the team is to rebuild, this has to stop and they have to get lucky with a really good draft in all rounds this year and next.

Lord knows I've been no apologist for the Leafs and their many ills, but when I see idiocy like LEAFS SUCK and SO-AND-SO RULES, all it does is betray the writers as juvenile hats-on-backwards yabos who simply cannot convey their point in a discussion without resorting to that crapola. Stick it in your ear, and while you're at it, look up the difference between "their" and "there" - you'd be amazed at what the English language has to offer.

To "STILL A LEAF FAN" lets i guess we all have our crosses to bear and your is your hockey team, but excuses after excuse doesn't work , the Oilers had Pocklington as an owner and still won there share of stanley cups, so using Ballard is yet another stupid excuse amongsts leaf nation. Face facts and put excuses aside the leafs have sucked for the last 40 years and will suck for the next 40 because people like you find every excuse in the book, but the right one and that is "THE LEAFS SUCK!!!!!!!

It seems no one wants to weigh in on this one so I'll add my comment as follows:

"It's rather notable" that Montrealer has to comment on the ineptitude of the Leafs. As a 45 year old life long leaf fan, I have also always appreciated good hockey and good hockey teams and therefor, have always appreciated the storied Montreal Canadians. It bothers me however, that so many Habs fans take so much pleasure in the Leafs not doing well. Let's face it, it's not the players faults, hell, we've suffered through the Ballard years where he almost singlehandedly destroyed a once storied franchise in the late 70's, early 80's however, in the early 90's they came back with a vengeance to an almost Habs / Leafs final in '93 were it not for Gretzky with the Kings. Anyway, they are on hard times now and I for one look forward to the next few years if they are able to land a GM with some experience in building through the draft, for real, astute trades and yes, eating some salaries to move a few of the no trade 5 like Kabina and Tucker and giving more opportunities to some of the good young talent thay have with the Marlies and complimenting / leading them with some good available free agents and grit players who want to come to Toronto to play. It may take a few years but I for one, believe it or not, still have faith! Time will tell.

It's rather notable that the Leafs have no one on that list!
