What should the Habs do in the off-season?
Thu, June 5, 2008

Having a big, tough team suits some NHL clubs, but isn't the top priority of the Montreal Canadiens.

So don't look for general manager Bob Gainey to dismantle his smooth-skating club after their playoff defeat to the bruising Philadelphia Flyers.

Gainey and Carbonneau met with the media to discuss the season that just ended, in which the unfancied Canadiens finished first in the Eastern Conference and in goal-scoring in the 30-team league.
Full story: Gainey will be busy in the off-season

What do you think Gainey should do with Canadiens over the summer?

Enough about all these foreign players missing the bus come playoff time. These guys can see the prize not like the Sundin's or Alfredson's who know all to well what it takes to choke. This team has learned to rely on each other and know their role and that confidence spreads through each line. Our scoring is well rounded. Our defense steady. But it's our goaltending that will take us all the way. We may question or second guess Gainey's moves but remember Dryden's or Roy's first plunge into the playoffs was ridiculed. The future is so bright in Montreal. If it's not this year that we win it all, the experience of a few playoff rounds will only make us better next year and years to come.

Habs are indeed ready for the playoffs, but it won't matter because whatever team wins the East will get curb-stomped by whomever wins the West because Eastern teams simply aren't tough enough. Anaheim, Detroit, Dallas, San Jose. All strong and mean. Montreal, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Ottawa. All fast and skilled but lacking in toughness, and please don't bring up Laraque, Neil or whomever, because my point is about overall team toughness, which is a necessity in the post-season. or need I bring up last years finals?

Not this year, there are holes on defence seen when Hamrlik was out, and the scoring has been patchy off of the Plekanec line. Much as I love Koivu for the leadership he brings, his skills don't merit him centering either of top two lines anymore (Jokinen would have looked good there Bob) Price won't be where they are let down, He has showed his poise everywhere he's been. I see them winning one round (if they don't draw the Rangers) maybe two. Next year and the 5 after that however look out.

Rather them then the Hens!

Gainey has set the Habs up for failure by choosing to use two rookie goalies from here on out.

The pressure is getting to Price, and his lackluster play lately is showing this.

Goob.....you be right. Sens have but 5 Euros and Zero Yanks. Habs are what the Sens used to be: soft.

Ahhh Hab Nation been smoking the same stuff as Leaf Nation.

Let's take a look at a little history: Feb 7th....lowly Leafs spank the Habs 4-2. Then the struggling, sputtering Sens on Feb 9th bitch-slap the Habs 6-1. So methinks planning the parade down St. Catharine Street is a tad premature.

Too many (10) Euros and Yanks(3) spells an early exit for this crew of girlymen.

Beware the Ides of March. Hibernating Bear (Senators) are about to growl.

The Habs are quietly becoming Canada's best chance for the Stanley Cup. It all rests on Carey Price's shoulders.
