What should the Habs do in the off-season?
Thu, June 5, 2008

Having a big, tough team suits some NHL clubs, but isn't the top priority of the Montreal Canadiens.

So don't look for general manager Bob Gainey to dismantle his smooth-skating club after their playoff defeat to the bruising Philadelphia Flyers.

Gainey and Carbonneau met with the media to discuss the season that just ended, in which the unfancied Canadiens finished first in the Eastern Conference and in goal-scoring in the 30-team league.
Full story: Gainey will be busy in the off-season

What do you think Gainey should do with Canadiens over the summer?

Yo George, thanks for the epiphany on the playoff structure. Just another string where your trying to be the almighty intellect and resident know it all. But as luck would have it we all know you know buttkiss.

gainey, carbo, muller, won the cups together...then carbo & muller, gainey went to minnesota (then dallas) with jarvis, bring in carbo and muller and they win the cup, build a "solid team for many years" - and now they are repeating the process... it's all about laying foundations - lemaire was here in the early 90s (a genius) he then set up the devils with Lou - now he's a few brains away from doing something similar in minnesota (give him another 5 years or so).... habs have an excellent chance. The key is you bring in smart people.

Honestly, the Habs are too soft to make it past the 2nd round. Kovalev is playing amazing hockey, but when he gets hit, he still disappears. All in all, they are too young and inexperienced. Not this year. Maybe in a couple of years once they mature.

I'm not a fan of the habs, but,I really like what management has done to this team.Lots of young talent, and, most of the time, they play really good, intertaining hockey.Having said that...as much as I'd love a canadian team to represent the east,I believe they won't make it past the second round.I think the devils stand a good chance of coming out of the east, while I like the Av's chances in the west,IF,of course, they can make it past the refs-assisted ducks.I was hoping Ottawa could go "all the way" this year, but with the wheels falling off the buggy in mid-season,my hopes are long gone.

Mark S. - I had to read tour post several times to make sure I was reading it correctly. "Whoever gets first gets to play the Ranger???" Are you saying the Rangers are going to finish 8th? Because that's who the first team draws in the opening round. Same with the Penguins. I doubt they'll finish as low as 7th, and that's who gets to play the 2nd place team.

For the record it's 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. If the Habs get first they might wind up playing Ovechkin and the Caps, the way things are going.

You bet the Canadiens are ready. Whoever is first gets to play the Rangers, in all likelyhood, and second plays the Penguins. Habs need to finish first because the Penguins are going to be dangerous. If Price gets hot like Roy did in 1993 then we have a good chance.

Hi I am a 54 year old fan of Montreal, they have been my hockey team ever since I was 9 years old and I think that this year just may be their year.. GO HABS GO

Off topic...just a little. I don't who is picking the Sunshine girls lately....must be JFJ, because today's looks like Bobby Holik

i really do not see them getting to far pretty much much only one line scoring consistently all season, koivu higgins rider need to step up but i think it's to late, not a cup contender this year.
