What should the Habs do in the off-season?
Thu, June 5, 2008

Having a big, tough team suits some NHL clubs, but isn't the top priority of the Montreal Canadiens.

So don't look for general manager Bob Gainey to dismantle his smooth-skating club after their playoff defeat to the bruising Philadelphia Flyers.

Gainey and Carbonneau met with the media to discuss the season that just ended, in which the unfancied Canadiens finished first in the Eastern Conference and in goal-scoring in the 30-team league.
Full story: Gainey will be busy in the off-season

What do you think Gainey should do with Canadiens over the summer?

The Canadiens need a superstar up front. Now that Lecavalier is out of the picture, they need someone on a bit of a lower scale like an Ollie Jokinen (no, I'm not jokin').

Montreal has some good prospects on defence and could trade one or two along with a player and a draft pick to perhaps get Jokinen.

They also need to trade a few of their lesser European players up front. They are too small and don't seem to come through when the going gets tough.

Darcy Tucker would fit in nicely back with Montreal as well as a leader and a gritty player if the price was right.

Montreal is sort of like Ottawa - they disappear when the going gets tough.

Montreal also over-achieved last year, so their playoff performance was not really surprising.

What can Gainey do, no one of any real talent wants to play in that province. I suspect they will not finish very well at all next year, Stanley Cup please. They will be lucky to make the playoffs!

Stephen Ames holds dual citizenship. He became a Canadian citizen in 2004.

Regarding your golf poll on which Cdn will contend at the US OPEN, just so we are clear, Stephen Ames is "NOT CANADIAN". He said he was from Trinidad and that is the country he represents last year. He may be shacked up in canada and have some greasy spoon cafe in Calgary, but he is certainly "NOT CANADIAN".

"the whole crtc is to blame"???? What are you smoking?

Man, is the "Brain Trust" at CBC comprised of monkeys? Or is George W. Bush running the network now?

But in all seriousness, this is a total embarrassment for CBC. This is yet another reason NOT to watch HNIC anymore. What will CBC do next? So far they've given one of their best play-by-play men (Chris Cuthbert) to TSN and now the most recognizable part of their flagship program (the theme song).

I guess it's only a matter of time before HNIC itself winds up on TSN. CBC, you guys are idiots!

that is sad that ctv could not leave things alone globemedia and the whole crtc is to blame shame on u guys

Now that was a good answer that actually can work for Montreal.

Good answer Pete I totally agree with you on that one

You can't Blame Price for their lost alone he had virtually no defence and little help from his teammates and he is still new. He's probally going to be the next best goalie all around. I hate the Hamilton Bulldogs but man is Price ever wicked in net. ((He was on Team Canada that did won the Goalie and he was practually the main reason why they won.))

Best of all when he was called up to Montreal he stepped up to the plate and gave it his all.

Montreal should do well next season. Who knows they might even win the Stanley Cup.
