Can the Leafs reel in the last playoff spot? Sat, March 22, 2008
The Leafs lose the easy ones but win the tough ones.
After shedding three players at the NHL trade deadline, the Leafs have 20 games to close the gap on 8th place in the East, but will need some help.
Can the Leafs perform the improbable and reel in a playoff spot?

Damn, I wanted the Leaves to hold on long enough for the Habs to eliminate them tomorrow.

Yeah, really, Vince? And when did the Habs come close to the cup the last time? 15 years ago? i would hold on to that song for a couple of rounds of paly-off hockey...

You gotta love their spirit, but they aren't going anywhere. Second and third line players are easy. The Leafs need young first line players to become serious contenders. The Leaf's Stanley Cup next year should be John Tavares and nothing but Tavares. That should be their main goal. To achieve it they need to lower their winning percentage next year. The only way of doing it would be to trade 4 or 5 regulars, like Tucker, McCabe, Blake (if they can), Pavel Kubina, and thank Sundin for his extraordinary service and let him sign with a contender. It's the only way the Leafs can build a team that Toronto fans can be truly proud of. I don't think Pettie has the intestinal fortitude to go through a season or two of public criticism, but if he did; he would be a hero.

Hopefully the Maple Leafs will lose again to Boston tonight.
They will then be officially eliminated from the playoffs and can start Raycroft in net again and get a higher draft pick.
They need Columbus and New York Islanders to pass them to get in the top 5.

Realistically, it's time to let this thread die on the vine. 90 points will do it for 8th in the East. To get there, over the points left to each, they need to play at the following rate:
Philadelphia - .200; Boston - .333; Washington - .600; Buffalo - .750; Florida - .900; Toronto - 1.000.
Even if the Leafs ran the table (highly unlikely) and wound up tied with Philly or Boston in wins and losses, they'd likely lose out on goal differential.
This is really no different than what they have done over the past 2 seasons. Start playing well when the pressure's off and, at the first sign of pressure (like against Boston - just as banged up as they were) - they play a mistake-filled game. At home. Their reward at the end will be another mid-range draft pick.

if they did, because of that momentum, i would not want to be facing them in the first round...
