Can the Leafs reel in the last playoff spot?
Sat, March 22, 2008

The Leafs lose the easy ones but win the tough ones.

After shedding three players at the NHL trade deadline, the Leafs have 20 games to close the gap on 8th place in the East, but will need some help.

Can the Leafs perform the improbable and reel in a playoff spot?

Go back to the freezer, Pete. You're having a meltdown.

It's just a game. The details don't mean a damned thing, so I don't go back and check the stats. Never kept them, and couldn't care less who plays for whom, or for how much. The question was, do the Leafs have a chance, and I gave you my opinion. So Minnesota was worse than I recalled; that just makes my point even more emphatically. Thank you.

Why would the Leafs want to make the playoffs? So that everyone (Leaf fans) can complain how they got blown out the first round? This is a lousy team run by an organization that only cares about the bottom line.

The Leafs will win the cup over Detroit in 6...any takers on a wager ?

No Roy, I certainly did not miss the point. MY point was that you got all your facts hilariously wrong. Even my dog knows that Gretzky and Coffey were long gone from Edmonton by 1991. And Minnesota finished with a record of 27-39-14... how is that 3 games under .500? Have the drugs worn off yet?

The Leafs are very well coached. Maurice has raised every player's playing level to the max. However, the talent level, unfortunately is not deep enough, so the team can't click on all cylinders on a regular basis. They play one or two games well, then sputter for a couple of games. It's not enough to get into the playoffs.

I don think the leafs are going to make the playoffs. They may be just a few points out of a playff spot but they could get on a big slump again or other teams will just start trying as hard as they can.

You're missing the point, but I'm betting that happens a lot, P.P.. My point is, if you make it into the post season, you've got a shot, and if you can hit it in stride, miracles can and do happen. The other main point was that no one, no matter how smart they may claim themselves to be, can predict what is going to happen. There's only one way a critic is ever remembered, and that's for being spectacularly wrong, so keep spoutin' off, boys, and keep wasting your money making bets, if it makes you happy.

I don't think the Leafs can make the playoffs, again. They're used to needing other teams to falter in order to 'let them in through the back door'. They're almost never in the position to have 'earned' a spot on their own merit. And then, if the miraculous does happen and they slip into that so-coveted 8th spot, Leafs Nation will swear some playoffs 'rags to riches' story is going to unfold.

Give me a break! This year, there's too many other teams above them, so too many others would really have to tank to allow the Leafs to slide in. This team is a bad team, plain and simple! RECOGNIZE it, people! But that's what years of singing the praises of mediocre players does for you. You become blind from constantly living in denial. The fact is, the Leafs have players who could only be regarded as 'stars' or great players by Leafs Nation. On most other NHL teams, most of these players would have trouble making the 3rd or 4th line.

Ah yes, Jon Gray & Karl. The Leafs do indeed have an intensely loyal fan base who support the team "even when they're down". You people are the very reason the team will never win anything. Why would ownership go the extra mile and ice a Cup worthy team when they know damn well that you idiots will fill the building every damn night?

The oh so proud Leafs faithful are the problem. "Leafs Nation" just lacks the brain power to see it and do what the fans in any other city do to force change: BOYCOTT THE TEAM!

The Leafs have been variations of terrible since 1968 or so, correct? Yet every single game every single season is sold out. Could that happen anywhere but Toronto? You claim to truly want a better team, yet instead of boycotting the team to force change you continue to sing their praises despite the constant mediocrity!

If you want a Stanley Cup in Toronto you have to hit ownership in the one place they will feel it: in their wallet. They aren't fools, YOU ARE. Stop filling their pockets when they're giving you crap. You people in Toronto haven't figured it out yet, so I don't imagine you ever will.

Leafs upper management and their fans still think its 1976. The product on the ice proves it.

With all that's taken place the last few days, Leafs won't make the playoffs this season, next season and most likely the season after that.

But hey! To the fans, keep your heads in the sand and keep buying those over-priced tickets and that over-priced Leafs' merchandise.
