Can the Leafs reel in the last playoff spot?
Sat, March 22, 2008

The Leafs lose the easy ones but win the tough ones.

After shedding three players at the NHL trade deadline, the Leafs have 20 games to close the gap on 8th place in the East, but will need some help.

Can the Leafs perform the improbable and reel in a playoff spot?

Don't make me laugh...the leafs have been rebuilding for 40 years. They are burnt "toast" period.

They may make the playoffs...and unless they play Ottawa in the first round they will get curb-stomped. Does Leafs Nation seriously think they can compete with New Jersey or Pittsburg? Sorry guys but they can't. It's not their fault, and they're trying hard but they simply can't match the talent level of teams like that. I saw a couple comments of "leafs over sharks in 7" and "leafs over detroit in 4"...lmfao. It will be either Dallas or Anaheim in yhe West, and even in the miracle event that the Leafs a)make the playoffs b)make it out of the first round and then c)actually make it to the finals, they simply aren't tough to deal with any of the teams that will win the West. Get your heads out of the clouds Leafs Nation, your team is showing guts right now, and has had a boost because Sundin stayed, but it will wear off. They are NOT a championship team. Sundin is an all-time great no doubt. Toskala? lol. Am I the only who remembers him getting exposed by Edmonton in the '06 playoffs? Talk about Canadian teams that actually have a shot, like the Canadiens or the Flames.(I won't even bring up Ottawa or Vancouver or even my beloved but sadly out of it Oilers.)

who cares i want to know why the leafs traded kilger and he is not playing for personal reasons.. i heard he pulled another gary leeman tactic and they shipped him out of town!!!!!

I presume you're asking this question regarding the 2009 season,aren't you? If so,the answer is NO...they're "rebuilding",remember?

With Sundin leading up front and Toskala in net the Leafs are unstoppable. They'll easily make the playoffs and go on to win it all.

No they will not make the playoffs but hopefully, they will show that they are not as bad as people think and that they only need a couple very good players to make them a 95 point a year team again.
Tim, 2008-03-03 21:56:50

No, they'll miss by a point, again. They've become masters of putting it all together too late and finish the best of the non-playoff teams. No playoffs and no top 5 draft picks...deja vu.
Brian, 2008-03-03 21:40:56

Not a great chance. With the games in hand from other teams it's more likely they will finish 10th, maybe 9th if they are lucky.

leafs over detroit in 4 for the cup!

I agree, the sooner Toronto's mangament can weasle the key players out of thier no-trade clauses the better. So I think that next year around June and July, you will see some major changes the leafs roster, and thier prospects. And I think that trading for draft picks was a smart move on Fletchers behalf, as he is right when he says that we need younger, and long term skill.

As for this years playoffs, things look real close. As packed as the Eastern confernence is, the fight for eighth place will be extremely intense. But with Toronto performing near excellent against the leagues best (Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo, and Montreal) and suffering to the more worse teams (L.A, Tampa etc.) is a good sign. Because all of Toronto's last upcoming games are against the East's best.

Plus you have to consider the ridiculous amount of injuries this team has suffered.
