Can the Leafs reel in the last playoff spot?
Sat, March 22, 2008

The Leafs lose the easy ones but win the tough ones.

After shedding three players at the NHL trade deadline, the Leafs have 20 games to close the gap on 8th place in the East, but will need some help.

Can the Leafs perform the improbable and reel in a playoff spot?

Reality in the form of a wet, dead fish just slapped them across the chops in that latest loss to NJ.

Over 70 games they have been exactly a .500 team - just as they have been for the past two seasons - and now they need to be an .833 team over the last 12 games, or 20 of 24 points available just to reach 90. Which may not be enough, And to get there they have to climb over 5 teams who, in the meantime, all have to start losing, and since some play each other somebody's going to be picking up points. Maybe both if they are 3-point games.

It ain't gonna happen, Leaf Nation. If they were smart they'd start Raycroft over the bulk of what's left and play a lot of those Marlie call-ups most of the time to try and settle back into the Top 3 draft lottery.

Otherwise, they'll be picking well down the lost again, and anyway, while there are good players available among the Top 3 or 4, none are franchise players in the mold of a Crosby.

So it's 3 years running out of the playoffs and 41 and counting since the last Cup. With little or no prospect of improving appreciably next year.

R.I.P. and good riddance to Canada's Team/Canoe's Team. Go Habs!

It sounds like in Toronto almost making the playoffs this season is the equivalent to almost winning the Stanley Cup. It must be nice to have such low standards to live up to.

Oh, some of us have been noticing Bob. Wouldn't it be something if the Habs were the only Canadian team to make the playoffs? Vancouver is no shoe-in, and Calgary's not exactly been the model of consistency.

I agree that it's a bit much to expect the Leafs to play at over .700 the rest of the way and, at the same time, expect all the teams above them to tank at once (and don't forget Florida, right there step for step with the Leafs).

Even so, they are at least showing up for their games, unlike those over-priced stiffs on the Sens top two lines.

The Leafs will make the playoff spot and play Ottawa in the first round! The Leafs will beat Ottawa again and advance to the final 4!

Leafs won't make the playoffs to many teams to leap over.

To Jay-Z don't think you notice but the SENs are doing a great job tanking themselves..

I've always rooted for the underdog. Seems like I've been rooting for the Leafs for over 40 years.
