What's your reaction to NHL trade deadline day? Mon, February 25, 2008
Aside from a December deal that saw Anaheim move Andy McDonald to St. Louis for Doug Weight in a salary-cap related move, the four-player transaction between the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes mercifully gave hockey fans a trade that actually had some serious news value.
The question is, will Monday's deal kickstart more moves between now and the Feb. 26 trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.
Will the NHL trade deadline be very busy?

Now that the Sens have started the ball rolling, you can expect all the clubs that see themselves as legitimate contenders to heat up the phone lines. More and more rumours will be heard around the league because everyone is going to start second-guessing about which "key" fits with which team.

Highly unlikely. The gap between the best and worst clubs is much narrower than it has been before. No one is so far out of it they are going to be inspired to tear down what they have to rebuild. The salary cap makes it more difficult to do an effective job of it. Has a last minute deal ever brought a Stanley Cup to anyone? More often it effects morale in a negative way. Bringing in a hired gun for the playoffs is saying to your team, "We don't believe you guys are good enough." Bad strategy.

Nope. The salary cap era has ended what was once a three-ring circus. The cap means teams have to pay more attention to drafting and development now, and then signing skilled players to longer term contracts. Forsberg will likely be the biggest story, Jokinen may move and perhaps Sundin, but I think after that it will likely be fairly low-key.
