Are the Sens better with Stillman and Commodore?
Mon, February 11, 2008

The Ottawa Senators have shaken things up.

Ottawa acquired forward Cory Stillman and defenceman Mike Commodore from the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday for forward Patrick Eaves and defenceman Joe Corvo.

The Senators lead the Eastern Conference and have made very few changes from the team that lost to Anaheim in last year's Stanley Cup.

Does this deal address problems in the Senators lineup? Are the Sens a better team following the four-player trade? Have your say in our forum.

Sens pull off a big deal

Blue ion the Valley the hell do you stick up for the biggest joke in the NHL and you like the rangers??!!

And Alfredsson not a leader, he's a leader that can put the puck in the back of the net! unlike Jager.

Hey Blue, the media does their job, we do ours, hockey players do their jobh. The point is the media gets paid to do what they do, but when you put all that together you get a big mess of things, trade talk when nothing is happening, sombody's hurt and they really feel better then ever, there will be lie's but also there will bne truth's. And you can't lie about how good Ottawa is, and im rooting for the habs but Ottawa's going far this year, but it's been a tough 42 year'[s for the leaf's.

Admittedly McGrattan doesn't get the ice time to show to any great extent, but from what I HAVE seen he is definitely a better puck handler than Neil who looks like he's handling a cement stick most of the time. His skating is certainly no worse than Neil's, but the most important factor is, he's not only more of a menace to the opposition when he's out there, he doesn't take stupid penalties , which all too often Neil does - and usually at the most inopportune time. He simply lacks discipline when it counts. At least, that's the way I see it. (shrugs).

McGrattan is a better skater and puck-handler than Neil? Do you even watch the Sens, George? McGrattan may some some talent hidden somewhere, but he doesn't play enough for anyone to see it. I guess you should be working in a scouting department somewhere, as you appear to have a keen eye.

Vince.... how can you say the team isn't better with an Eaves/Stillman swap up front? You're inserting a proven goal scorer into the lineup and losing a guy who has barely played this season. How is that not an upgrade?

And anyone who has seen Corvo play knows that any pluses he brings as a point man are hugely negated by his defensive shortcomings. Calling him "mobile" is just a nice way of saying he's often in the wrong end of the rink when the opponent's going the other way.

A sorta agree Vince. But it seems to me that a team with Alfreddson, Heatly, Spezza, Fisher, and Redden could do better on the PP - especially 5 on 3 at which they have to be near the bottom of the league.

How much of that is coaching? I mean, no offence to the man, but who the hell is Joe Carvel and how does he rate as a PP coach?

No matter how you look at it, this team is under-achieving big time since their fast start, and one thing has become very clear: when any of the Big 3 go down there is not one among the rest who has the ability to step up and increase his level of play to any great extent. And that includes Fisher who needs to be told he has others on his line and that it isn't necessary to cnduct rink-length rushes and try to deke everyone and his aunt out of position EVERY time. It's becoming not only monotonous, but clearly the word has gone around the league that he is trying to be a one-man wrecking crew.

Maszeros and Vermette can be dealt any time as far as I'm concerned, and while they're at it take Neil with them. Any grit he brings to the table is overshadowed by his stupid penalties. And I stress "stupid" because while there are good and bad penalties, he seems to focus on the latter. Give his position to McGrattan who is not only grittier and tougher, but a better skater and puck-handler.

thats a great point about the rangers.
RJ, 2008-02-17 18:49:04

Better? How can that possibly be? They traded "My Ham for Your Eggs". Corvo is gone and so is the point man on Sens Power plays. Commodore is here and we ha ve lost mobility on defence. Corey Stillman is equal to Patrick Eaves.

This is proven in the 3 straight losses that the Sens have sustained since the trade.

now i've heard it all... a rangers fan chastising others for the loyalty to their teams! perhaps mr. rangers fan should educate himself on the pathetic history of his team: established in 1926 and a grand total of 4 stanley cups in almost a century! even toronto isn't THAT pathetic.
Wlodo, 2008-02-16 14:44:55

Blue Valley: By your logic, every fan in every city are not real fans, they are just "deluded" by the local media. I live in Nova Scotia and I absolutely live and die with the Senators.... how do you explain me? I'm not deluded by Ottawa media.
