Who is your MVP of the NHL's all-star game?
Mon, January 28, 2008

Even though Eric Staal was selected the MVP of the NHL's all-star game and got the keys for a new truck by virtue of his two goals and an assist, there were other performances that stood out.

Rick Nash had a hat trick for the Western Conference and Evgeni Nabokov made some brilliant saves on Ilya Kovalchuk in the second period and was perfect in net with eight saves. Brian Campbell also chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Who would you pick as the MVP of the all-star game? Have your say in our forum.

Happy return for Savard

All star game MVP ? How about me, for watching this debacle. I really do need a truck.

As an inconsistency and contradiction to last night's MVP result, consider the 2004 NHL All-Star game.

Joe Sakic got the hat trick with three goals and no assists in a losing cause for the West. But for the East, Daniel Alfredsson led with two goals and one assist, including scoring the game winner in the East's 6-4 win. But unlike last night, Sakic was chosen over Alfredsson as the MVP.

Stu,

The players have lives to and they like the all star games, its a for most players and fun for the fans.

why do we even have an all-star game? sure it's probably fun for the players (and the skills competition is cool) but it is NOT real hockey. maybe the kids enjoy watching it but hardcore hockey fans know the all-star game is a joke.

If an MVP is awarded to both teams, there would still be debate in the case two or more players end up with an equal amount of goals and points, and other stats like +/-. How should the tiebreaker be made?

Once again the NHL gets it wrong!! How could Rick Nash score the fastest goal in the history of the all-star game and be the only player in the game to score a hat-trick, only to NOT receive the MVP award. If the game is about the fans and putting a show on for them, who did a better job?!?!

There should be MVP's for both teams. Eliminates debate about individual performance vs. game results over who should be honoured. Or would it end the debate?

Going by past trends, Rich Nash definitely deserved the MVP. In the past, a player who scored three or more goals was selected as the MVP (assuming no other player put up an identical point performance).

For the record, the MVP's of the last four all-star games prior to 2008 was someone from the losing team. Perhaps the reason the NHL didn't award the MVP to Nash was because they felt embarrassed awarding the MVP to someone from the losing team for the fifth straight game.

I'd say a huge injustice occurred in the 2002 game. The MVP was Eric Daze who finished tied for the point lead with two goals and an assist. Markus Naslund also had 2 goals and an assist, and the MVP should have been awarded to him because he played on the winning team and scored the winning goal late in the game. However, Naslund was snubbed because the MVP select was made five minutes before the game ended when Daze's North America team still had the lead. Talk about a huge snub and injustice!

there was no MVP, it was a lack luster game of pond hockey. Gone are the days of the true super star and MVP. The league has never been more watered down, Americans shoving their agenda down our throats.

Nothing against Staal, but if it was up to me Nash would have got the MVP.
