Who should be the Sens' starting goalie?
Mon, March 24, 2008

After alternating goaltenders for the last nine games, Ottawa Senators coach John Paddock is changing things up in the net.

With an eye toward picking a clear-cut No. 1 after the next 10-15 games, Paddock is looking for either Martin Gerber or Ray Emery to show they're worthy of the job.

Crunch time is coming. Who is your pick to be the No. 1 goalie for the Senators? Or should they go with splitting the duties between the two? Have your say in our forum.

Looking out for No. 1

Martin Gerber is my pick. He had the team in for 19 games before Emery came back. It was then that the team started to decline. Put Gerber back and stay with him while you shop for a home for Emery.

If Ottawa is to ever recover it's Class Image Emery must be moved. Out--Gone--No matter how good He might aspire to be. He is a Bad apple and the Barrel will be spoilt. That is an issue that is really separate FROM WHOSE RECORD IS WHAT. HE IS THE HEADLINE EVERYDAY AND THIS SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE. I DON'T THINK Mr. Melnyk GOT TO hIS LEVEL BY PUTTING UP WITH SPOILT PRIMA-DONNAS.. OUT WITH hIM. HE IS EVEN A DISGRACE TO THE ALI's AND CHUVALO'S HE HAS ON HIS HELMET. I AM A DIEHARD SENS fAN AND I BELIEVE HIS HERO WAS AND IS TYSON..WHO WAS AND IS A DISGRACE TO THE SPORT OF BOXING. JIM

Start Emery. Until such a time that Ottawa can acquire a goalie that can steal a game or two, I'd go with the guy letting in the least number of soft goals. Emery also controls his zone far better than Gerber and teams don't seem to crash the crease as often. If he can get a rhythm going, Emery is my choice.

Too bad about all the "battle of Ontario" crap that the Leafs have built up over the years. Otherwise a trade could be Raycroft and Sundin for Emery and someone else. But the Leafs could never bear their star in a Sens jersey so it won't happen.

And Gerry, bum or not, Hasek would have made the difference last year and a cup in hand is worth two...

They should trade Emery. The only problem is that his value has gone way down - they'd get about a 2nd round pick for him now.

Gerber did well at the start of the season when Emery wasn't around. Let Gerber be the man.

Hasek let Ottawa down. he decided to go to the Olympics, got hurt and didn't once try to come back when we could have used him for even a minute in the playoffs in 2006. Good riddance to that jerk. Next time stick the guys who pay your salary.

Unfortunately, goaltending has never been well handled by the Sens management. Gerber was not a great signing and giving Emery the contract they did after a flash-in-the-pan spurt, they deserve the predicament they are in. Too bad they alienated Hasek - definitely the goalie to take them to the Cup - gimpy groin and all. All he needed was a backup to support him.

Perhaps Emery would be better suited in the NFL, National Felons League or the NBA, National Baclava League. He's a hot head, maybe he should be the first one tested in the NHLs new drug testing, erratic behaviour and all.

Agree with you 100% Joe. If Murray doesn't pull off at least two trades, one for that elsuive Top 6 forward and the other for a D that doesn't go into panic mode when the the other team applies a little pressure, and somehow get rid of that distraction called Emery, the Sens are in for a short playoff run.

In fact, I see the Habs pulling ahead of them in the Division and maybe both Pittsburgh (who are playing better without Crosby than Ottawa is without Heatley) and NJ passing them in the Conference.

Guys like Vermette, Eaves, Corvo, Donovan, Robitaille, and Neil just do not have what it takes to step up when the big guns are out of the line-up, and that has become painfully obvious.

Gerber, I think, could play consistently well IF he knew he was the # 1 from here on and not be worried about being yanked because of a soft goal. Paddock is becoming too much like that idiot Keenan in Calgary, and I can see a scenario where Murray steps behind the bench again.
