RIP Don. Brian Williams said in this era of specialists, Wittman was incredibly versatile in the number of sports he could cover. We will never see another Don Wittman. He will be missed, not only on Saturday nights but when the olympics come calling again this summer. He was the Best.

Several years in a row, I ran into Don on a beach in the Barbados. We'd discuss sports and our golf scores on a nearby course. He'd ask how I played a certain hole on the course and Don had a remarkable memory of what we'd discussed the year before. A classic gentleman and a true sportsman.

Very sad news...a legend in my heart being a Winnipegger. I especially enjoyed his call of HNIC games during the 80's and 90's No one will forget his voice from the 1996 100 metre final and a week later in the 4x100 in Atlanta!! God Bless you Don.

"smooth baritone?"
My favourite Don Whitman memory is his call on Dave Ellett's double-OT goal in the 1990 Jets vs. Oilers Smythe semi-final.
I truly believed the Jets were on their way to the Stanley Cup, and Don seemed to be just as excited as I was.
Godspeed, Mr. Whitman.

RIP MR. WHITTMAN. THE VOICE OF CANADIAN SPORTS, IN FACT SPORTING WORLD. MY VERY FIRST MEMORY OF MR. WHITTMAN WAS HIM CALLING THE LOTTERY BALL NUMBERS. THE SPORTING WORLD WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. WE HAVE LOST AN SPORING ICON. LETS JUST HOPE THAT CANADIAN SPORTS PAYS THE PROPER TRIBUTE TO HIM THE WAY DON DID IS JOB.
WE WILL MISS YOU.
