Should composite hockey sticks be tossed?
Fri, December 21, 2007

The Leafs lost last night after defenseman Pavel Kubina’s stick shattered at a crucial moment.

Do you think defenders should go back to the more trustworthy wooden sticks?

Tampa sticks it to Leafs

Al MacInnis had the hardest shot in the league and used a wood stick. Composite sticks are for guys who have a lousy shot. Why not just give these guys a steel rod?

I don't think composite sticks should be banned, but players got along just fine with wooden sticks.

Seems like the companies are promoting them because they can make much more profit on them than cheaper, wooden sticks.

Darren, both sticks and one more then the other(composite). But I agree with Vince.

RJ.

I didn't say wooden sticks won't break. I said they were more "trustworthy" (your word) It is very difficult to tell if or when a composite stick is going to break, however with a wooden stick you can see if it is damaged and grab a new one before the next shift. Not foolproof but effective. I don't remember watching hockey in the wooden stick era and see one break just taking a pass, it happens all the time now.

Composite stick manufacturers either haven't yet perfected their sticks to last or build in intended weaknesses so that they make more profits from breakable sticks. The NHL should demand higher standards from the composite stick manufacturers and threaten them with a 20% rejection call-backrate similar to Automotive auto parts manufacturers are subject to.

Darren, if you think wooden sticks are so trust worthy then why did Jozef Stumpel use one on a face off and it snapped, and people are saying all this because one stick snapped when a player needed it most, any stick will break, you probaly just waited for something like this to happen so you could tell all these people that wooden sticks are better, one stick snapped at a bad time. if wooden sticks are so much better than why do all of the best players use the compasite?

Yes I think they should be tossed. They seem to break very easily. Al McInnis had no problem using a wooden stick when others were using the new product at the time, aluminum shafts.

MacInnis could still fire the puck at over 100 MPH with a wooden stick so they cant be all that bad.

What should be tossed are moronic sports writers who write drivel blaming a loss on a broken stick. At least this excuse is more humorous than the usual blaming the refs or the schedule. It's almost as funny as story about how magical the Leafs were when they were on their winning streak earlier this month. Maybe they should have used some of that magic to fix Kubina's stick.

RJ wants to know why wooden sticks are more trustworthy. With a wooden stick you could jump on it with your skates on and still use it with no problem, but with a composite stick all you need is a little nick to completely compromise any strength or flexibility. And I think Al MacInnis proved that shots with a wooden stick can be just as hard as a composite stick.
