Should Simon be banned?
Wed, December 19, 2007

Chris Simon has received the longest suspension in NHL history - again.

The New York Islanders forward was banned 30 games by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell after Simon stepped on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu during a game over the weekend.

What do you think should happen to him? Have your say in our forum.

Simon banned for 30 games

Sporty: Leave Laraques alone. He is an enforcer, yes, but not a cheap shot artist. Brashear you could make a case for, but not Georges Laraque, who to my knowledge has never had a lengthy suspension for spearing, stepping on people or hitting from behind

30 games suspension for Chris Simon is a bleeping joke!

This guy is a criminal on skates. He should be gone for life. The NHL still doesn't get it.

He was not fighting, he was assaulting. His act had nothing to do with a hockey play. He is a habitual offender at assaults (7 time repeat offender).

The other criminals on skates in his class are Donald Brashear and Georges Laraque. They cannot even be classified as hockey players. They just run around on the ice helter-skelter like and maul people. There is no room for them in a skilled League such as the NHL.

RE: "First Nations" comment:

Your comment would have some credibility if Simon's coach wasn't from First Nations, but he is. And he (Ted Nolan) would never condone what Simon did. Secondly, look at another First Nations player, Jordin Tootoo --- he plays a rough style, but the league has never suspended HIM for 30 games. In fact, he is well liked around the league and by fans. Why is that? Because he is not a cheap shot artist and repeat offender like Simon is. He deserves more than "a couple of games". This is coming from a visible minority myself

He got what he deserved. Colin Campbell finally got the only thing right since he started his job. A lifetime ban is what Todd Bertuzzi should have gotten when he ruined another players career. Can you say preferential treament. I know you can.

Yeah, I saw the hits. He's another Bertuzzi. No room in the NHL for people who can't control their temper to those extremes. Give him the boot!

as much as I like the good things about the guy - I've seen him when he's been the best player on the ice - this is too much. I hope he doesn't spiral down into some hopeless personal tragedy, but the risk he represents to other players in the league can't be tolerated.

He's a repeat offender, and the offenses keep getting worse. I am all for giving guys a second chance (Bertuzzi, Domi, Hunter, etc.) but no one has been as notorious a repeat offender as him. He has overstayed his welcome in the NHL and needs to be banned for the rest of the season, not just 30 games (like what the NBA did after that brawl in Detroit).

This was a direct intent to injure. The suspension should begin ONLY after the injured player (ie the victim) gets back in the line up. Civilian charges shouls also pend!

There are tough, duke it out enforcers and there is a place in the game for them, but intent to injure is wrong and this guy is a repeat offender and a disgrace to the game. Kick him out before he kills someone..he should be in prison.

Yes Simon should be banned. This is his second serious attack on another player in less than a year.

In both cases he is very lucky neither player was seriously injured. In this latest incident Simons skate blade could have cut through Ruutu's muscle and tendons with very little force.
