Should Simon be banned?
Wed, December 19, 2007

Chris Simon has received the longest suspension in NHL history - again.

The New York Islanders forward was banned 30 games by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell after Simon stepped on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu during a game over the weekend.

What do you think should happen to him? Have your say in our forum.

Simon banned for 30 games

Time for the NHL to get rid of this type of crap and let the real players play.

I can only imagine what it must be like to walk that fine line between controlled violence and loosing control all together. To be asked to go out night after night and be your team's enforcer, to patrol the ice when it is your job to ensure the safety of your team's stars, and yet have the level of control required to shut it off until it's required must be very difficult indeed. I am not trying to justify Chris's actions, I am just not ready to condemn him without some understanding of his circumstances. There have been many other instances of "enforcers" in this league imploding either on or off the ice. The internal pressures of what they are asked to do on a nightly basis must be enormous. Chris has the added distinction ( and pressure? ) of having a larger skill set than most hockey "goons", ... he has never looked totally out of place when it comes to playing a regular shift on any of the teams for which he has played.

I also think the instigator rule has made the job these individuals perform even more difficult ... for the first time they are finding themselves challenged by individuals that have absolutely no intention of EVER dropping the gloves. It must be very frustrating to have to deal with the beakers and agitators out there who continue to hide behind the rules as they are now. We would see less of these kinds of situations, less disrespect for the welfare of fellow players health and possibly less injuries to the stars who "carry the mail" if the league would repeal the instigator rule.

All that said, I think the 30 games is probably a just punishment in this case because we still have to be held accountable for our actions and he has the distinction of being a multiple repeat offender.

Simon has been given a second chance and he blew it. Suspend him for life before he seriously injures someone.

That baseball type swing last year that hit the Rnger player in the face should have been at least a year suspenion. How that guy wasnt injured with at least a broken jaw is unbelievable.

Simon should be banned for life. What are we waiting for? for him to repeat again, he had enough chances.
Charles, 2007-12-23 10:06:20

Simon always has been a JERK since he came into the League and probably always will be.I don't knw how he's lasted this long.He isn't even a good Goon.He needs a good beating by someone like a Tony Twist,Gordie Howe,Clark Gillies or someone of their prowess to wise him up.As long as these teams have yellow streaks down their backs and do nothing but run their mouths and wait for the NHL to administer the justice that they fail to do,this stuff will continue to go on and on.
