Does Ramage deserve a prison sentence?
Thu, January 17, 2008

Former NHL player Rob Ramage was called an "exemplary citizen" Thursday, but an Ontario judge said he had to send a message of deterrence against drunk driving as he sent him to prison for four years for a crash that killed his friend, a former Chicago Blackhawks player.

Do you think Ramage got what he deserved? Have your say in our forum.

Ramage sentenced to four years

Magnuson's family has forgiven Rob Ramage for the harm he did to them. That speaks volumes about the family, but has little to do with justice as we expect our courts to mete it out. I agree with Magnus, and many others, who have said that justice must deal equally with everyone. Mr. Ramage's celebrity status as a professional athlete should not entitle him to celebrity justice too. I also agree with Mr. Magnuson's family however, that Ramage can serve the community as a spokesperson for sobriety, and personal responsibility. Let him serve three years in a minimum security facility first though. One life was lost, but many more were put in peril. How can we, in good conscience, allow anyone to walk away free after that?

The man that killed my mother and her friend got 2 counts of 3 yrs served at the same time. He was driving at the time on a suspended license for a previous impaired. Where is the justice? Magnuson got into the vehicle knowing Ramage was impaired. My mother and her friend did not have that option. To me, no sentence is long enough!

I was going to say that the judge should go easy on him because of the support of the Magnusson family. But after reading the other comments, I realized that that would be a mistake and it would be wrong to cut him more slack than any other person. I'm convinced by the posters in this forum. He should get as much jail time as any other "non famous" person.

Rob Rammage should be treated not as a hockey celebrity but as an ordinary everyday citizen. If that were me or anyone else we'd be looking at serious jail time. I'd give him 3 years as a minimum , plenty of punishment and time to think about how his stupidity has impacted and devestated the Magnusson family for the rest of their lives. A shame !!!

Like an earlier post said he pleaded not guilty....shows the real remorse this guy has. What possible good could letting Ramage off do? And who would want their kid lectured to by a drunk? He's not a hockey player now nor was he when he killed his friend so treat him as such

No, he should not go to jail. You can compare this to Heatley in a lot of ways...he also killed a friend...his friends parents did not want him jailed...he showed definite remorse...he was also drinking, although not legally drunk. He is paying and will pay for the rest of his life for killing a good friend.

All reasons to spare him jail time, which will serve him or the public no good, just cost us more money.

Definitely Jail time, he should know better by now, drunk drivers kill 4 people a day in canada, what will it take to make it go through the thick skulls of idiots that d&d?

4 years at least, the other player is dead!

put the drunk in jail
george, 2007-12-18 16:01:46

If I'm not mistaken Mr. Ramage felt so bad he plead not guilty on all charges.
gordie, 2007-12-18 15:54:23

As much as this is a preventable crime, it's not a preventable sentence. Mr. Ramage should be held accountable for his actions.
